English Cockers, Afghan Hounds, Bull Terriers, club affiliations, those were some of the extracurricular activities competing for time in the life of Pat Cruz. Of course, there were also the typical life demands of children, home ownership, and a full-time job. Pat’s story checks all the boxes for the realities of this sport. It is always demanding, but somehow everything gets done. So, let’s pick up the story where we left off.

“A few years later we moved to Stonybrook. My parents gave us the down payment on the house. This was 1965, and the kids were seven and nine. I took the civil service exam and started working for Suffolk County.” I was supporting my family in those years. When I graduated from high school, I was going to pursue secretarial studies, that kind of thing.” That’s not exactly how it went down.

Life very rarely turns out as envisioned. And as we all know, this fascination with dogs invariably plays a big role in revising that trajectory. Anyway, this dog-centered life was not her original plan, but we’re glad that Pat ended up here with us. This is the point in the story where Pat reinvents her life.

Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s she was actively involved with Afghan Hounds, English Cockers, and one of the earliest incarnations of formal sighthound racing as a founding member of Liberty Hounds. Agreeing to run your phone number in The Times signifies a serious time commitment. Her spare time was in short supply but when you get obsessed with dogs, you always find the time.
