The foundation of the Bullmastiff in the 19th century was reported as 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog (as those breeds existed back then). He was the gamekeeper’s dog used to keep English estates and game preserves clear of poachers. The breed could work quietly, and move quickly to take down and hold the poacher without doing serious damage. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1933 and is currently ranked 60th based on registration statistics.
Twenty Bullmastiff breeder-judges were invited to participate in a survey on their breed’s priorities in conformation. Six additional experts were also invited. Sixteen responded that they would participate, and twelve returned surveys. Those who contributed average nearly thirty-five years in the breed and those who judge average more than ten years being approved to judge the breed. About half have judged their national specialty, and most have judged other Bullmastiff specialties.
