The old adage, “The more things change… The more they stay the same,” might be on its last leg as far as the dog sport goes. So many aspects of the sport have moved in so many different directions.

We enjoyed huge, spectacular dog shows–overflowing with entries (many in the 2,000-3,000 range) along with a huge gate of spectators in the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s. Santa Barbara, Western Reserve, Westbury, Westchester, Detroit, International…the list was as long as it was impressive. Then a shift in the culture and social mores chipped away at the sport and moved our sport in another direction. Many of the country’s biggest shows have recently celebrated milestone events where they eclipsed the century mark.

Until the late-‘90s there were longstanding “circuits” where a string of shows were held in close proximity to each other. The Florida Circuit went from Jacksonville, to Daytona, to Lakeland, to Tampa, to St. Petersburg, to Sarasota, a day off to get to Palm Beach, and then landing in Miami. Every day a different venue…Yup, we showed up, set-up, ran in left-handed circles, and then packed up only to repeat this every day for over a week. There were similar circuits in New England, Texas, North Carolina, and a few others I might not have attended.
