10 – The Annual, 2024-25

In 1974, a veteran newspaper reporter named Rick Rutledge decided to start a business. His plan was to couple his passion for the sport of purebred dogs with his media savvy to start a newspaper about the sport. This led to his launch of The Canine Chronicle in 1975.

Pat Hastings told me that, “shortly after The Canine Chronicle launched, the American Kennel Club’s board of directors called Rutledge to their offices to express their displeasure with his new magazine. His explanation about why the magazine was thriving ended the discussion then and there.” We’ll save the rest of that story for another day. It’s a doozy.

The format of CC was a black-and-white, weekly newspaper containing show information, photos, statistics and articles complemented by ads for show dogs that were top winners and those hoping to reach that status. Although there were competitors in this space that were published in different formats, Rutledge found a niche. He did it all at that time–he was the writer, editor, salesman, and printer. That’s right, he printed it in his basement.

I was 11 years old when The Canine Chronicle was founded. As my interest in showing dogs grew over time, I found myself reading CC every week. I admired the ads, devoured the information within its pages, and hoped some day to have an ad for my dog in it. Finally, that happened.
