The Big E – Embracing Errors

By Elaine Lessig

Who among us is perfect? As the saying goes, “To err is human, to forgive is divine.” That makes all of us fallible whether we accept it or not. I am fond of the phrase, “When you get to be perfect, let me know how you did it.” To date, no one I know has succeeded in becoming totally perfect. That leaves plenty of room for us to embrace our errors, learn from them, and consider the options when we encounter them. It may sound prophetic, but it forms the basis for moving on as we confront our mistakes–as inevitably we will.

I will give you a few moments to recall some of your own mistakes. Whether there are simple ones like failing to feed your dogs again, paying the mortgage, or forgetting about your brother’s birthday, possibly others are a bit more tricky. For example, cancelling a restaurant reservation at the last minute, going to a dog show rather than a family event, and calling in sick to work because the Green Bay Packers are playing a late Sunday night game may strike a chord with you. Haven’t we all done something in that realm? What say you?

The next question is, “Did those decisions become troublesome errors because of the repercussions?” Did you get discovered when your Best in Show was published in the Canine Chronicle Show Results in which your mom, who breeds with you, saw the win? When you went to make another reservation at that same restaurant, were you asked for a credit card to hold the table? Did you make the mistake of telling a work pal that you stayed up late to see the last play of the game the following day when you returned to work? Ooops! Your supervisor overheard the conversation, and what followed was not pretty.
