Every year or so, the topic of requiring critiques at all AKC shows emerges. Requiring all judges to write a critique for each dog they judge may, and does, work in some countries, but could it ever work here? When I hear the suggestion surface, many things come to mind but the first is always this:
In the blockbuster 1992 movie, A Few Good Men, Col. Jessup, played by Jack Nicholson, is being grilled by Lt. Kaffee, played by Tom Cruise. The dialogue is classic, with Nicholson’s last line being one of the most memorable in movie history.
Judge Randolph: You don’t have to answer that question!
Col. Jessup: I’ll answer the question!
Col. Jessup: [to Kaffee] You want answers?
Kaffee: I think I’m entitled to.
Col. Jessup: You want answers?
Kaffee: I want the truth!
Col. Jessup: YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Do exhibitors really want to know the truth? I’d like to believe the majority would. But how many would even care? Would some treat them like the first-place ribbons left on tables or in trash cans at every show? Would they respect the judge and the process?
