Cognitive Decline Syndrome in Dogs and Cats Subject of Latest Webinar

Cognitive decline syndrome in dogs and cats was the hot topic discussed during Morris Animal Foundation’s latest webinar. During the virtual event, pet cognition experts provided tips and tricks for pet parents on what they can watch for and do to keep their furry friends mentally fit as they age.

Veterinarians Dr. Starr Cameron and Dr. Michael Khan, who are researching canine and feline cognition, provided insights into the prevention and treatment of, and common misperceptions about, cognitive decline during the webinar held April 24.

Some cognitive decline is a normal part of the aging process in dogs and cats. However, many elderly pets suffer from CDS, a disease that can markedly impact a pet’s quality of life as well as strain the human-animal bond. Early diagnosis, coupled with interventions, can delay progression, and, in some cases, reverse decline.

“Cognitive declines affect thousands of dogs and cats,” said Dr. Kelly Diehl, Morris Animal Foundation Senior Director of Science Communication. “As they are living longer, CDS is impacting more pets and their families. This webinar is a great way for pet parents to learn the latest information about the disease and how they can keep their pets happy and healthy.”
