Knock. Three. Times. On the ceiling if you want me. That notable lyric from Tony Orlando and Dawn were no truer words spoken in my dog show world. When purchasing a puppy from an AKC breeder, one must register the dog. Breeders usually have a theme to follow for the litter registration. The breeders also identify the litter as a limited or full registration.
When thinking about a registered name for my dog, I was to select a title of a song that started with the letter “K” (I was going for a limited registration as I was buying a pet). The breeder suggested “King of the Road.” I politely said that song doesn’t appeal to me or fit the puppy’s personality. Perusing my playlist from my phone, I saw a song that appealed to me. “Knock Three Times” was a notable and memorable song, and although I’d seen it as a registered name on a dog years ago on a Westminster broadcast, I wanted to use it anyway. And, Classic Affinity Knock Three Times as my dog’s registered AKC name was born!
You name it, there’s so much for a first time puppy buyer of a relatively new AKC breed to know in that moment you go to pick up your pup. Consider the following: reading the contract, microchip information, a call name for the puppy, food and nutrition, health and vaccines, grooming for the breed, nail care, and on and on.
There’s nothing wrong with having so much thrown at you all at once when signing off on a puppy. We are, after all, in the age of the internet where one has access to researching the breeder, breed and contracts. Putting pen to paper, I signed off on my limited registration for my new puppy. Oh wait, I did initially say, “in my dog show world,” in the first paragraph, but that’s not where we started. Here’s how going from a limited registration to full registration happened.
