Table Talk · May 13, 2020

I see light at the end of the tunnel!  My prediction is we will all be together again sooner rather than later.  While we are still seeing show cancellations, we are also seeing clubs that are trying to move forward and have their shows as scheduled.  We need to support the club decisions on both ends of this spectrum, not judge anyone, and make the best decision for ourselves and our dogs when it comes to attending the shows being held.  Those that have not worked on a show committee cannot possibly understand the magnitude of the decision to cancel a dog show.  Rather than judge those clubs that have had to make the difficult decision to cancel, consider reaching out to see how you can help them in the future.  The sport of purebred dogs is based on breeding and competition, so without events to compete at, our sport no longer exists.

It looks like the Peach Blossom Cluster in Perry, Georgia on June 17th-21st will be the first show since shelter-in-place and crowd regulations were instituted during the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March.  Again, it is my hope that everyone will respect each other’s decisions to either attend or not attend this cluster.  Those attending should honor all efforts to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.  Altering the way we have all operated in the past will be stressful, and may seem more difficult, but I know we all have it in us to be kind, patient, and flexible!  Please consider offering a helping hand to the show committee who is trying to lead our sport in a positive direction.

It also looks like the cluster comprised of Dayton Kennel Club, Sandusky Kennel Club and Lima Kennel Club in Lima, Ohio from June 26-28 is also still on the schedule.  The River City Cluster in San Antonio and the Reliant Hall Cluster in Houston, both in Texas, are also a go at this point in time!

Several handlers are planning to hold conformation classes as restrictions in their areas are lifted.  Many are asking for suggestions as to how they can maintain social distancing yet still be able to host a good conformation class.  Anyone with suggestions for how to modify a normal class situation to accommodate social distancing requirements is encouraged to reach out to me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.

This past Sunday The Canine Chronicle hosted another Facebook Live kennel visit.  Over 19,000 people joined and viewed Kay Peiser’s Chinese Crested kennel visit.  The week prior, an equal number of fanciers joined as Pam and Dave Peat talked about judging Dachshunds.  These Facebook Live events are amazing educational opportunities not only for aspiring judges, but for all fanciers.

I am deeply saddened to report the sudden passing of Carlos Navarro, internationally recognized FCI judge and German Shepherd Dog fancier.  Carlos was loved by all that knew him and he was always the bright spot on the judging panels on which he served.  He will truly be missed by the fancy.  Condolences go out to his family and friends.

Did you know that May was Pet Cancer Awareness month?  If you are interested in what the AKC Canine Health Foundation is doing in honor of Pet Cancer Awareness month, you can visit www.akcchf.org/caninecancer.  The Canine Health Foundation will be distributing over $900,000 in 2020 for canine cancer research.

The CHF received the Charity Navigator 4-Star rating, which is the highest award they offer.  They have also received the Guide Star Platinum Seal of Transparency.  Congratulations to the Canine Health Foundation for their continued quest for success and efforts on behalf of our canines.

Five years ago this past weekend I was enjoying the lovely wedding celebration of Vicki and Jeff Cushman!  Happy Anniversary, my friends!  It is hard to believe that was five years ago!

Remember to tune in to NBC next Sunday, May 17th for the 2020 Beverly Hills Kennel Club dog show presented by Purina. It begins at 8 PM EST and promises to be entertaining to anyone who loves dogs.  This is the rescheduled airing of the show held this past February.  Production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Celebrating birthdays this week are:  Monica Booth, Alessandra Stymiest, Cody Koch, Sergio Brown, Jay Richardson, Tony Vacha and Keith Olson.  This is a birthday that you surely will not forget!

Stay safe and stay well my friends.  May everyone re-enter the grid at their own pace.  I look forward to seeing everyone soon!  Until next time…
