Table Talk · July 24, 2019

Deb’s first Table Talk Live! solo adventure has come to a close. The Houston World Series of Dog Shows 2019 was a great success. I did not have the opportunity to attend this cluster for the last several years, and I was fortunate to be able to go back this year, and bring Table Talk Live! to those in attendance as well as those at home who could not join us. The NRG Center is an excellent venue for the show with excellent HVAC, ample floor space for grooming, large rings, vendors and many special attractions. The cluster members, at the direction of Cluster Chair Tom Pincus, do an outstanding job of ensuring there are fun and educational special attractions to attract the public and educate them about the sport of purebred dogs, as well as the fancy in general. The DJAA once again held their judges education seminars, which were very well attended.

I cannot thank Tom enough for his kind hospitality. It most certainly helped make my first solo Table Talk Live! broadcast a success. Thank you to all for joining me in the fun.

I would be remiss without saying congratulations to the kennel clubs and to Onofrio Dog Shows for executing an efficient show schedule.

Congratulations to all fanciers who successfully completed the Texas Trek 2019! 18 Shows over 27 days, including 4 days of move-in and move-out. Well done, my friends. Now, get some rest!!!

Groups that are scheduled late, causing longer-than-necessary days, seem to have become the norm at dog shows recently. I have heard reasons ranging from not enough judges, to not enough rings, etc. I saw a photograph of rings at a show this past weekend that were almost all empty by 9:30 AM, yet groups were not scheduled until 3:30 PM! An appeal from the fancy to show giving clubs and superintendents: Please do your best to hire enough judges, and have a sufficient number of rings to allow for efficient show schedules. These 10-12 hour show days at shows with entries ranging from 400-800 dogs just do not seem to be necessary.

Several fanciers elected to forego shows this past weekend due to the extreme heat. In most cases, those that stayed home were entered in outdoor shows where temperatures and/or the heat index was forecast to be in excess of 100 degrees. It is my hope that others will not judge those that stayed home, or those that elected to attend. There were also several shows with venues with sufficient air-conditioning. Those that stayed home know their dogs, and felt it was safer and better for the well-being of their charges to skip the weekend’s events. Hopefully, those that attended outdoor shows have sufficient equipment to keep their dogs cool, know their dogs limits, and are confident that they do well in the heat.

Healing thoughts to Elizabeth Salewsky who is home recovering from shoulder surgery. Anyone who knows Elizabeth’s vibrant personality, and love and passion–not only for showing dogs, but her role as a police officer–also know that it is very tough to keep her down! Heal quickly, my friend! We miss you.

Best wishes to Anne David as she has been in and out of the hospital for several months while undergoing several surgeries. We have nothing but positive thoughts going out to her daughter, Jessica David-Tauber, during this difficult time. Get well soon, Anne!

Golden Retriever fancier Rebecca Scribner has passed away. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time. The fancy also lost Poodle fancier Dudley Barker who passed away last week. Mr. Barker assisted many Japanese poodle fanciers in bringing their dogs to the US. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

Happy Anniversary to Sarah Purdin-Golding and Gordon Golding! May you lovebirds have many more years of joy and happiness.

Desi Murphy is off to Brazil where he will judge a French Bulldog specialty, and take in some lovely sights, I am sure!

Mickey Fiegelson and Chuck Leachman are off to Amsterdam for a vacation. Have fun, my friends!

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Kris Shultz, Judy Welch, Jim Ham, Jenny Listug, Terri Giannetti, Stuart McGraw and Kyle Robinson. A very special happy 92nd birthday to Joe Gregory!

Be careful in the heat, my friends. Pay attention to what your dogs tell you! Be safe in your travels, be kind to your fellow exhibitors, and don’t forget to take a little time to help a new exhibitor! Until next time…
