It’s hard to believe that 2019 is here! I hope you had a restful, enjoyable break and took the opportunity to spend time with friends and family. As we begin another year, I’d like to wish everyone the best of luck for a prosperous new year, not only in the ring, but also in your entire life. I encourage everyone to follow your dreams! Life is short, and we have only one opportunity to make the most of it!
Our dear friends in Colorado–the Johnson family–suffered a great loss last week when Avory Kvale, daughter of Courtney, granddaughter of Doug and Michaelanne, and niece of Colton and Heather, was tragically killed in an automobile accident at the young age of 17. The outpouring of love and support from the dog fancy has once again proven how close knit and supportive our community is. A fund in Avory’s memory was established and over $28,000 has been raised to date. Colton Johnson posted the following on Facebook: “So many unbelievable memories and yet not enough. This young lady touched so many people in her short 17 years. She was everything I wanted my kids to look up to which is so hard to find in any teenagers today. Taking day by day has never seemed harder for my family. Thank you for your support and prayers.” I know the entire purebred dog community joins me in offering most sincere condolences to the Johnson family at this most difficult, sad time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
A celebration of Avory Kvale’s life will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Black Forest Lutheran Church, 12455 Black Forest Road, Black Forest, CO 80908.
I was saddened to hear of the passing of GCHP Sandpiper’s Let Freedom Ring aka “Freedom”, the big winning Golden Retriever who was shown by Tara Schultz. “Freedom” was not only a beautiful and successful show dog, but was also a very important part of the lives of many including Bruce and Tara Schultz, Toyomi Tsumura, and Patty Pace. We express our sincere condolences to all who suffered the loss of this wonderful dog.
It seems the holidays brought sorrow to many in our fancy. Sadly, Judge Phyllis Wolfish passed away at the age of 90. Phyllis was one of the first judges I showed to many, many years ago and she was very kind and tolerant of a newbie. The sport also lost Great Dane fancier Judi Parr this past week. Dana Cline lost his brother, David, as well. My heart is with everyone that experienced such great loss during this holiday season.
Kim and Angela Booth are off on their annual African journey. If you have not had the privilege of seeing Kim and Angela’s photos and videos from their African photo safaris, I strongly encourage you to grab the chance! I look forward to seeing more great memories from their latest trip.
Bruce Schwartz is off on a Cuban adventure. I look forward to seeing photos and sharing vicariously in his island adventure.
We wish a happy 16th wedding anniversary to Dennis and Katey Brown. Cathi and Tom DiGiacomo are also celebrating a wedding anniversary! Happy Anniversary guys! May you enjoy many more years of wedded bliss!
Congratulations to Emily Thiel and Ron Kubisiak who got engaged on Christmas Day.
Wendell Sammet spent the Christmas Holiday at “home” at Dassin Farms with Joseph Vergnetti and his clan. Wendell looks great at the age of 93 years young.
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Elaine Reisman, Beth Gray Harper, Joseph Vergnetti, Deb Shindle, Kayley Kovar, Debbie Melgreen and Katey Brown.
