Table Talk – December 19, 2018
AKC National Championship week 2018 has come to a close along with the 2018 show year! Some dogs did their final left-hand circles with their handlers and will go home to lie on the couch and enter parenthood. Other dogs are just getting started. Most handlers say the toughest part of their job is saying goodbye to a favorite Special after a long show career. Many a tear is shed on Sunday evening after this show comes to a close.
Harry Miller and the guys in Orange did a fantastic job with the traffic and crowd control in Orlando. It never hurts to send out a thank you or give them a nod when you see them. Job well done, guys. Thank you!
The Junior Showmanship competition was one of the highlights of my week! I had the opportunity to watch semi-finals and finals. With an entry of 159 kids, Junior Showmanship was the largest entry at the show. I am pleased to say that it was also some of the deepest competition. When we think about our sport being in jeopardy, think about a field of 159 juniors competing at the AKC National Championship. It should give you a bit of renewed hope for our sport. Alessandra Folz-Stymiest had the task of judging the preliminary and narrowing the field to 12 finalists. Amy Booth was then center ring to take the Finalists through their paces. These kids are absolutely amazing. They showed no fear or intimidation and stuck to the task at hand. A couple of handlers were challenged by their exhibit feeling their nerves after long competition under the most stressful of circumstances, but these handlers were able to keep their dogs engaged and “catch” them when they checked out. The sportsmanship, professionalism and determination were such a joy to watch! Congratulations to Claire Ctibor and her Irish Setter, Hudson, for your Best Junior Achievement at the 2018 AKC National Championship. The AKC Delegate body voted on the proposed 1+1=1 rule at their meeting in Orlando. For those new to the issue, a proposal was made allowing for Best of Winners to earn one point if there was one entry in each sex entered and shown. This proposal passed at the December meeting. In order to clarify, the following are the provisions for this rule:
The rule allows an exhibit awarded Best of Winners the opportunity to earn a maximum of one championship point at an event if:
1. There are regular class competitors present in both sexes.
2. Neither sex has sufficient regular class competitors to receive a point.
3. The combined number of regular class competitors for both sexes meets or exceeds the number required for one point for the breed/sex/division.
The rule does not alter the criteria to become a Champion. A dog still must (1) be awarded 15 points from a minimum of three different judges, and (2) obtain major wins under at least two different judges to receive its Championship. The rule does not change the points schedule or the number of competitors required to earn a point.
EXAMPLE 1: There is 1 regular class dog and 1 regular class bitch in competition under the following point schedule.
Result: BOW is eligible to earn a point regardless of the sex.

Result: Winners dog is eligible to earn a point if awarded BOW; Winners bitch is not eligible to earn a point if awarded BOW.

Result: BOW is not eligible to earn a point regardless of the sex.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Doberman breeder/fancier Mary M. Rogers. Mary was a visionary in the breed and a great mentor to all. Our condolences to all who were close to her as we know she will be missed.
Happy 20th Anniversary to Jorge and Susie Olivera! You guys don’t look old enough to have been married for 20 years. May you have many more years of love, prosperity and Best In Shows!
