“The Contract”

65-80

The world of AKC dog shows seems to be ruled by contracts. We enter into oral or written contracts to buy, handle, register, breed, show, and co-own our dogs.

Tara & Johnny at the Dog Show

hamilton-tj_bkg_feature

Many, if not all of us, will have already watched Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir join the masters, John O’Hurley, David Frei and Mary Carillo, at the National Dog. We have come to appreciate, enjoy and rely on John, David and Mary as being “some of our own’ at the helm of this prestigious dog show broadcast.

If I Could Talk to the Animals

hamilton-talk_bkg_feature

With all deference to Dr. Doolittle*, if we could talk to the animals at the center of a conflict they would give us some remarkably creative solutions. Dr. Doolittle sings, ‘If I could talk to the animals…what a lovely place the world would be.”

Important to Me – Important to You

hamilton-important_bkg_feature

Think about what is important to you. If you take a moment, it is pretty clear. Now think about what is important to your significant other, co-owner, breeder or neighbor. Understanding what is important to others will save you an incredible amount of grief and misunderstanding.

Fear Free

hamilton-fearfree_bkg

If you had attended the 2015 American Veterinary Medical Association Conference in Boston in July, you would have found a remarkable number of human-animal bond speakers as instructors. One instructor in particular, Dr. Marty Becker, brought his Fear FreeTM veterinary practice information to attendees. Full disclosure requires that I tell you I’m on the advisory panel of Directors of the Fear FreeTM veterinary method. After attending Dr. Becker’s presentation at AVMA I thought my dog show colleagues would like to learn more about this eye-opening new program.?(https://www.drmartybecker.com/fear-free/veterinarians-talk-fear-free-practice/) Why am I talking about this in my article in The Canine Chronicle? Because, even though I’m on the panel, I didn’t fully understand what this program was all about, how much additional income subscribing veterinarians are now making and that there is a better way for our puppies and older dogs to go to the vet.

Creating a Positive Atmosphere

Atmosphere

While flying to an event in Dallas, I read an article in the Delta Sky magazine about Mr. James Corden. I hardly ever read anything in a ‘Sky’-type magazine but I love James Corden so I dove right into the article. It talked about his explosive start on late night TV and how he didn’t re-invent the genre as much as created an atmosphere. He allowed his guests to trust him. I started thinking and realized that this would make a great topic for an article in The Canine Chronicle.

But for the Grace of God

65-80

In our lifetime things happen. We travel and make choices about everything in our lives each and every day. In the world of dog shows we plan campaigns and breedings, attend nationals and do things dog-esque that turned out really well for us, or not.

Revisiting the Service/Emotional Support Dog Question

hamilton-servicedog_bkg_feature

If you remember, my initial Canine Chronicle article addressed the unseen consequences of using show dogs as emotional support dogs (ESD). It highlighted the fact that some highly campaigned dogs fly cage free from show to show by using documentation that list them as emotional support dogs. One of the consequences of this misuse is that people who need to fly with their ES or Service dogs may be bumped or subject to greater scrutiny because of underlying suspicion in status. This article will address what, if anything, all breed, local or national breed clubs might do to thwart the abuse of ES & Service dog status by their members.

Start with Why?

Why

We all read with profound sadness articles recounting the loss of Jagger, the Irish Setter, after the Crufts Dog Show. It struck particularly close to home because I breed, own and love Irish Setters. My life has been shared with these beautiful dogs since eighth grade. Having bred and shown them since 1984 under the Rumraisin prefix they have won best in show, national specialties, obedience, field and performance titles. It is difficult to read about any dog getting poisoned. When you read about a dog of your beloved breed arriving home and dying after competing in a show as prestigious as Crufts, it gets personal.
