The Crufts 2019 Best in Show Champion is Dylan the Papillon from Belgium
The Papillon, also known as the ‘Butterfly Dog’, takes top award for the first time
After four momentous days, a new Crufts Best in Show champion has been crowned as Dylan (Multi Champion Planet Waves Forever Young Daydream Believers), a Papillon, took home the coveted title tonight (Sunday 10thMarch).
In a packed arena, Dylan, who is two years old and his owner, Kathleen Roosens from Belgium, were cheered on as they were chosen by top judge, Dan Ericsson. Dylan’s win was a historic first for both Belgium and the Papillon breed, captured live on Channel 4 in a programme hosted by Clare Balding, and watched online around the world by millions of dog lovers.
Almost 21,000 pedigree dogs from around the world competed at the Birmingham NEC over four days for just seven places in the Crufts 2019 Best in Show final. The other six finalists were Luther the Irish Water Spaniel, Dave the Boxer, Charleen the Samoyed, Mike the Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit), Eva the Scottish Terrier, and Bearly the Shih Tzu.
Delighted owner Kathleen said of their win: “We’ve been up since 5am this morning, but he just keeps going. I cannot grasp that we have won Best in Show just yet – I think I will be on cloud nine all week!
“I think the audience already loves a little butterfly Papillon, but I think Dylan may have charmed many more tonight. He is our Dylan the villain, whenever he goes out he comes back covered in mud!”
The Reserve Best in Show award was won by Mike, the Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit), owned and bred by Sara Robertson, a Kennel Club Assured Breeder from Wallingford, Oxfordshire.
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “This has been a fantastic year and an incredible final. Congratulations to Dylan who helped end this year’s competition on a real high, taking the prestigious Best in Show award with his owner, Kathleen. The pair were very deserving winners and it was clear to see their strong bond when watching them together in the ring.
“Well done to all our wonderful finalists too, the dogs and their owners and handlers should be incredibly proud to get through to such a prestigious final – it really is a special achievement.
“Crufts is a British institution that is adored by dog lovers all over the world and we have been so delighted to see the unique bond between these much loved dogs and their owners.”
