Table Talk
Hurricane Harvey has left so many in our dog world with such great loss, the type of loss many of us have never and will never experience. Our dog show family once again has stepped up and is providing needed support to those in need. I realize I am not aware of everyone that has stepped up to the plate, but please allow me to publicly thank those that I know have provided much needed support:
Stephanie and Lauren House organized a donation drive and left Sunday for Texas with a van full of donated dog food and supplies. Loran Morgan, Evan McDermott and Joey Alarcon were among many that helped load all the donated supplies. Safe travels girls, and thanks so much for your efforts!
Aaron Wilkerson was part of a large group of folks who assisted with relocating displaced animals from Texas. This relocation involved driving the dogs and cats to an airplane that was donated to fly the animals to safety. Kudos to Aaron and everyone involved for coming to the aid of our beloved animals.
Lauren Hay-Lavitt will hold a fundraiser at her Splash Premier Pet Resort this Saturday to gather supplies and raise funds for those in need in Texas. Thanks Lauren and staff for stepping up for the cause!
The Southern Handlers Charity League (SHCL) is doing what they do best: This time they are raising funds for those in need who have suffered great loss due to Harvey. The Austin Kennel Club, in conjunction with SHCL, will hold a 50/50 Raffle, a Chuck-A-Duck Raffle and will raffle off a 50-inch Television at the shows on September 23rd and 24th with proceeds going to those impacted by Harvey. SHCL will also be holding a fundraiser and supply drive at the Greeley, Colorado shows. Impact Dog Crates is raffling off a crate with proceeds going to the cause.
In Lexington, Kentucky several group winners donated their Purina Pro Plan prize food to the dogs in need in Texas. Those who donated their prizes included Tracy Szaras and Louis Abreu, Carlos Puig, Mike and Linda Pitts, Jorge and Susie Olivera, Cindy Lane-Smith, Daryl Martin and Nina Fetter. Lois DeMers loaded all the food in her motorhome and took it back to Texas. Way to go guys!
GoFundMe pages have been established for several of our dog show friends. Again, I don’t have a list of them all, but these are the ones that I am aware of: Kayley Kovar (the grooming part of her business – Four Oaks Puppy Club – will re-open in the next couple of days, but there is much work to be done before she can re-open her boarding kennel). David Williams whose trailer was on Kayley’s property sustained too much damage to be recovered and must be replaced. Chase and Carolyn Waddell, whose K9 Kwik Klips grooming and boarding business requires rebuilding. I know there are more, and I will be happy to mention them in next week’s column if you send me the information. Please know that we are thinking of all of you who have sustained damage and loss.
On a happier note, there are several wedding anniversaries being celebrated this week! Happy 39th Wedding Anniversary to Pam and Bob Lambie (Pam, you must have been married when you were in kindergarten!). Happy 19th to Sam and Karen Mammano. Lovebirds Kathy (Hritzo) and Bruce Heimann are celebrating their 35th. (Kathy: You’ve got me by four years and it is hard to believe either of us are old enough to be married so long!). Patrina and Bruce Odette are also celebrating years of wedded bliss!
Congratulations to Tara Richardson and Clay Powers who were married in St. Louis this past Sunday. Several fellow handlers and friends joined for the festivities including Erin and Rob Hall, Gina Weiser, Lisa Bettis, Robin Novack and Laura King, and Alicia Morrison Jones.
Congratulations to Amanda Giles and Daniel Martin on your engagement. May you enjoy many years of happiness!
Best wishes to Betty-Anne Stenmark and her husband, Ben, on their upcoming move to Grass Valley, California.
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Brianne Major, Karen Justin, Bonny Datema, Kim Calvacca, Lisa Thomas and Lorraine Rainwater.
My most sincere condolences to Elizabeth Salewsky on the loss of her aunt, Tara Bulicz. Elizabeth, I am with your Aunt Tara: PLEASE BE CAREFUL AT WORK!!
This past holiday weekend on Saturday there were 15 AKC shows with a total entry of 9,729 entries. Entries ranged from 180-1474 with an average entry of 648. With the addition of shows in Ohio (new this year) and Purina Farms (new last year), I fear that the entry at shows is being severely diluted. Plus, how many shows are needed in the Midwest on a given weekend?!! I don’t know about you, but it sure feels to me like there are too many shows these days! AKC seems to study everything, how about the effect of so many shows on our sport. Thanks to Desi Murphy for the statistics!
As our friends in the Southeast brace for Hurricane Irma, please know that you are in our thoughts and we will be here for you!
That’s all for this week my friends. Please be safe, hug your pooches and don’t forget that kind gesture for a “newbie” at the shows you attend. Until next time…..
