Last week’s discussion about weather-related show cancellations sparked a healthy conversation on Facebook. I was surprised by how many people were unaware that the decision to postpone or cancel a show ultimately rests with the Show Chair. I was pleased to see that most fanciers appreciate the importance of prioritizing the safety of both exhibitors and their dogs. There was a consensus that, whenever possible, clubs should consider postponing a show rather than canceling.
Sadly, at a recent show, dogs were lost due to a malfunction in a rig. I sincerely believe that no fancier would ever allow something like this to happen intentionally. That is why incidents such as this are called accidents–albeit tragic ones. Occurrences like this can often be prevented. No technology is foolproof; electricity can fail, generators can malfunction, and even temperature monitoring systems can stop working. When temperatures are in the ‘80s and ‘90s, conditions can deteriorate quickly. Vehicles should always have ventilation: open windows, roof vents, or open doors when it is safe to do so. Airflow provides valuable time to respond if something goes wrong. Remember: warm airflow is always better than no airflow. There is no substitute for regularly checking on your vehicle and your dogs. Our dogs are counting on us to protect them!
The Virginia Kennel Club hosted a terrific special event at their shows a couple weeks back. The ‘Senior Showmanship’ competition was a huge hit! There were three classes: AARP (ages 50–60), Social Security (ages 61–70), and Immortal (ages 71 and up). The classes were judged by Juniors, who took their job very seriously! The Ancient and Awesome Best Senior Handler winner came from the Social Security class, handling her Smooth Fox Terrier puppy. Congratulations to Jane Nolan! A lovely, hand-knit afghan and a handmade sash were presented to commemorate this special win. Proceeds from the event benefited the Virginia Kennel Club Juniors. I heard it was a great time for both participants and spectators!
As previously announced by the AKC, the event service fee increases again January 1, 2027 from $4.50 to $5.50 per entry. The Montgomery County Kennel Club, more fondly known as ‘The Greatest Terrier Show on Earth’, has announced that they will be absorbing that increase, and not passing it on to exhibitors. It is fortunate that Montgomery County can do this for their exhibitors. Kudos to the volunteers of Montgomery County for doing all they can to help their exhibitors save money.
Sadly, Elevate Ranch, the 70-acre facility in Bennett, Colorado is back on the market. This is the venue that the Johnsons and Livingstons purchased to be a multi-faceted event facility for canines and equines. This was a very difficult decision for all involved, but the bureaucracy surrounding the county zoning, and changes needed to make the facility a success, presented too many hurdles to overcome. They hope this very special property with so much potential finds its place with the right people that might bring their vision to life. You can see a lovely video of the property at https://www.facebook.com/ElevateRanchCO.
Many of us use the internet to stay up to date on what is happening at dog shows around the country. At The Canine Chronicle, we do our best to post all-breed show results on our Facebook page and website as quickly as possible. Some fanciers have used the AKC Weekly Wins to keep track of show results. However, beginning July 1, AKC Weekly Wins will no longer be available. Those who logged into the AKC Weekly Wins gallery this past weekend were greeted with a pop-up message informing the fancy that the service would be discontinued effective July 1. Fortunately, The Canine Chronicle will continue to provide timely show results and news through our Facebook page and website! We also encourage fanciers to send Owner-Handled and specialty show results to showresults@caninechronicle.com, and we will post them as soon as possible.
Happy 50th Anniversary to Pam and Paul Laperruque! Best wishes for many more years of wedded bliss ahead. Dave and Pam Peat are celebrating 58 years together. Unfortunately, they celebrated this year’s anniversary in an airport lounge due to flight delays. Hopefully, once they return home, their year will be the best yet!
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Angela Booth, Greg McCarthy, Amy Gau, Hannah Sohnle, Maripi Wooldridge, Marietta Singleton, Bruce Schwartz, Victoria Cornish, George Marquis, Lisa Porter, Tracy Szaras, Ashlie Whitmore, Heidi Gervais, Rod Ott, Laura King, Christian Rutten and Rachel Corbin. May this next trip around the sun be the best yet for each and every one of you!
Words of inspiration for all to remember:
“In life you will fall out with people that you never thought you would. You will be betrayed by people you trusted with all your heart. You will be used by people you would do anything for. Life also has a beautiful side to it. You will be loved by someone you never thought you would have. You will form new friendships with people that will establish more meaningful and stronger relationships. You will overcome things you never thought you would get over. e all have chapters that end with people at some point in life. Take pride in knowing that the very best part of your book is still being written.”
