The 2026 Renaissance Cluster in Madison, Wisconsin, was a huge success! Ed Fojtik and all the dedicated volunteers left no stone unturned! The attention to detail was incredible, which is why the number of Specialties held at this cluster continues to grow.
This was the first year the Renaissance Cluster was held in the larger building, and it’s a great building for a dog show. Most clubs would not have been willing to tackle the heating issue, as the building is not heated, but the cluster’s vision and determination made it happen. Large heaters were rented and used to pump heat into the building. The combination of Sunday’s low temperatures, a heater going on the fritz, and the building emptying out made the temperature inside the building on the last day of the show slightly cooler than some would like, but it certainly was not unbearable. In my opinion, things could not have gone better, and I believe this cluster will continue to grow. Congratulations to everyone involved, and thank you for your hard work and dedication to our sport. I can’t wait to see what next year brings!
The Saturday show in Madison was dedicated to Mike Arnold (aka “Alpine Mike”), who was tragically murdered in his home in January. Ed Fojtik gave a heartfelt dedication to Mike and his lifelong contribution to his chosen breed and the sport. Mike was a lifetime member of the Illini Great Dane Club and the Lake Shore Great Dane Club, and he was heavily involved in organizing the specialties at the Renaissance Cluster. Our sincere condolences to Mike’s friends and family on their tragic loss of this special man.
Of course, while in Madison, I could not miss going to D’Vino – Jason Hoke’s amazing restaurant. It is always a treat to experience the incredible creations made by his partner, Dino. D’Vino is one of the reasons the Renaissance Cluster has become one of my favorite events to attend each year!
A heads-up to all my friends who may not know this but should: the private parking lot across the street from D’Vino is just that: Private. It is not owned by D’Vino. Just ask Amy Rutherford, who after an amazing evening at the restaurant, went out to find her rental gone. Yup, they are serious about the private nature of that parking lot. Even with a very expensive mistake, Amy was smiling ear to ear about her experience at D’Vino!
Sadly, the Spring Cluster that is normally held at the Big E in mid-April has been cancelled due to the venue booking all the buildings. Despite volunteer efforts, an alternative venue could not be found at the last minute, and the clubs have no choice but to cancel this year’s shows. The clubs announced that they look forward to welcoming everyone back in April of 2027!
Texas fanciers are mourning the loss of their dear friend, Sergio Espejo, who lost his battle with cancer this week. Sergio was loved by everyone at the shows, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. His kindness was second to none. Sergio will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
It is with great sadness that I share the news that lifetime Louisville Kennel Club member Melinda Lyon has passed away. In addition to being one of the key members of the Louisville Kennel Club, Melinda was a well-known West Highland White Terrier breeder and AKC judge. Most importantly, Melinda was always a bright light at the shows. Her positive attitude was infectious. The Kentuckiana Cluster will not be the same without her.
For those planning on attending the Kentuckiana Cluster in Louisville, please do not forget to send in your reserved grooming! Reservations should be sent to Louisvillegrooming@yahoo.com. All reservations must be paid by going to www.executivedogshows.com. Be sure to complete all information requested or you will not be able to pay for your reservation.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Heather Buehner, Charlotte Patterson, Jen Baggenstos, Lynda O’Connor-Schneider, Maddie Peterson, Luke Baggenstos, Nate Francesco, Kristin Lawless, and JoAnne Thibault. May the year ahead bring you an awesome journey filled with joy, beautiful dogs, and many rosettes!
Remember this my friends. Never leave the house without a kiss, a hug, and an “I love you”. Then wipe the dog hair off your lips on the way to the vehicle!
Be safe in your travels, all! I will see you soon down the road. Until next time…
