Table Talk for Wednesday, March 25, 2020 – Take 3!!!!! I have to be honest and say it’s been a bit of a task to maintain my positive theme this week. I truly believe there are a few good things that come out of being a ‘shut-in’ for a period of time. While it is challenging for those of us that are more accustomed to being on the go, we must redirect that energy in a positive way. I’m trying!! I have limited the amount of national and local news that I will watch. Frankly, the 24/7 news cycle was starting to drive me crazy. I am going to maintain my sanity, and push through this, and come out stronger and smarter when it is all said and done; and this crisis WILL end my friends. Until then, I am going to enjoy my dogs, try to stay in shape, learn as much as I can, and use the additional time I have on my hands to improve at my craft, and help others in any way that I can. We are ALL going to come out of this craziness a stronger community.
I am learning to discipline myself in ways that I have not had to do in the past. I always thought I was a very disciplined person when it came to my diet and my fitness. The fact of the matter is I was a creature of habit! What I’ve learned is those are two very different things. Either way, I’ve got this. With a little push from my friend, the one that I have pushed and coached in the past, I have a new routine. I am now developing workouts and doing them with my friends via WhatsApp video chat. I get great pleasure in torturing the people that I love, and I would love to throw a little torture your way! It’s just one of the ways I feel I can help the dog show community that I love.
None of us enjoy the uncertainty of this moment in time, and we have to remember that this uncertainty will lead to a stronger tomorrow! Many of you have not had to deal with the stress of putting on a dog show. There are so many intricate parts, a lot of which concern maintaining financial viability of clubs and their shows. In a time where things are so uncertain, many clubs have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel this year’s show(s). Considerations include site availability, judge availability, deposits, attendance, just to name a few. Instead of attacking those that have to make these difficult, unpleasant decisions, reach out to these people and ask how you can help them going forward. We have to be responsible as a community and continue to support each other in times like these.
Like me, I am sure many of you have had to navigate the airline industry recently in order to get a refund or credit for a cancelled flight. I had an exchange on social media with a friend and fellow Delta flier about confirmation of cancellation and fellow fancier and travel agent Kyle Robinson saw the exchange. She chimed in and offered to give me a hand to confirm my credit. I have been booking my own travel, but Kyle offered to help out just because! Thanks so much, Kyle! Once again, a fellow fancier helps a friend.
I was thrilled to hear that Bobby Paust is now home from the rehab facility and will continue his “training”, as Bobby calls it, from home. I was told the Peats kindly went over to his home to help build a much-needed ramp and welcome Bobby home. You see, our community is as strong as they come, and I will continue to proudly share stories like this with the fancy. Bobby loves video messages, so if you are so inclined, please record a video message and send to Bobby via Facebook Messenger.
Kristyn and David Stout had a bit more excitement than they bargained for when their Brittany, Audrey, was bitten by a poisonous snake. Thank goodness they were on top of it, and Audrey is now home with them and making a full recovery.
I lost a long-time friend in the dog world this week. John Benoit passed away following a valiant fight against cancer. John and I showed dogs together more than 30 years ago and we had some great times. He was a great friend; always willing to help anyone in need. He was also a great dog man, and I would consider him a pillar of our community. His wife Kris was his world, and he hers. The fancy has lost a true friend, but more importantly, Kris lost her soulmate. Rest well, my friend. I am glad that you no longer have to fight. We all will miss you.
The World Dog Show 2020 in Madrid has been rescheduled to July 9-12, 2020. I cannot imagine the undertaking to reschedule an event of that magnitude!
The taped production of the Beverly Hills Dog Show held in Pomona, California on Saturday February 29th was scheduled to air on NBC on Sunday, April 5th. Production of the program has been delayed, and the show will be aired at a later date. In its place, on Sunday April 5th, NBC will air the show from 2019. If you missed it last year, now’s your chance!
We, at The Canine Chronicle, will continue our efforts to support the sport any way we can. We are doing our best to keep the fancy connected through this period of social distancing. In our efforts to provide a plethora of educational and informational resources and a venue to stay connected with fellow fanciers, we are asking you, our readers, to help us develop more content. Here are some ways you can contribute to the cause:
1) Trivia: Whether you have been involved with the sport for 1 year or 30 years this is a great opportunity to either test your knowledge or learn things about the sport that you don’t know. Do you have a suggestion for a trivia question? We’d love to hear it. Please send suggested to input for our Trivia project to Cheslie Smithey at Cheslie@caninechronicle.com. Check out our website or Facebook page for trivia questions that have been posted already. We all have more that we can learn about the sport we love!
2) Canine Chronicle Virtual Dog Show – You Be The Judge: What a great opportunity to learn about other breeds! Try your hand at evaluating different examples of a breed and maybe learn from some experts about the various traits and characteristics of different breeds. We would love your help! Please submit profile stacked photographs of examples of your breed for inclusion in this project. We need the dog’s approximate age at the time the photo was taken and whether it is a dog or bitch. Photographs can be sent to Cheslie Smithey at Cheslie@caninechronicle.com.
3) Throwback Photos: Do you have historic or older photographs that you think the fancy would enjoy? Many of our friends are taking this time at home to clean out offices, cabinets, storage units, etc. As you are going through photographs, if you have old photographs of judges, dogs or exhibitors that you think the fancy would enjoy seeing, please share them with us. Please send photographs to Cheslie Smithey at Cheslie@caninechronicle.com Also, please identify the people and dog in the photo if you can.

We are adding new content constantly and there are many Breed Priority segments and interviews with icons of our sport and AKC personnel that present a great opportunity to learn more about the sport of purebred dogs. This week we wish a Happy Anniversary to Chris Ann and Ronnie Moore. I’m glad that you guys got away on vacation before things got crazy! May you two celebrate many more anniversaries together.
