Table Talk · August 4, 2021
After a fun-filled Table Talk Live! week in Houston, I headed to Portland, Oregon for the rescheduled Rose City Cluster to work with my friends at Purina. This year’s show was held at the St. Paul Rodeo in St. Paul, Oregon, about 20-30 minutes from the city. There were a few very hot days, but overcast skies saved us on a couple of the days and made the temperatures somewhat pleasant. St. Paul is a cute, agricultural town with a population of 425 (yes, my friends – 425) with many peach, hazelnut, and hop farms. I honestly have to say that visiting Ken & June’s peach and hazelnut farm on the way to the dog show and getting a tour of the Fido Pet Food Bank were the highlights of my Portland trip! Club volunteers worked very hard to make the hot, dry conditions workable by providing large fans in the tents and coolers with water for all exhibitors. It is always great to see my Pacific Northwest friends since I don’t get out to that area nearly enough. It was a special treat to visit with Bobby Paust who is truly thrilled to be back out at the shows with his friends. Keep up the great work, Bobby! We are all thrilled to have you back!
Professional handlers have their hands full at shows trying to cover all the bases. They need to make sure the dogs in their string are taken care of, groomed to perfection, get in the ring at the appropriate time, and get those win photos for their owners! Sometimes taking photographs at group time can get tricky and add a bit of stress. This is stressful not only for the handler, but for the photographer and others who are trying to get photographs. While I recognize there is a great deal going on at group time, if a handler needs to request to go to the front of the line for a photo so they can get back in the ring, a bit of kindness would go a long way. A kind request to wait along with a thank you is appreciated by those who have been waiting!
RV parking for this year’s rescheduled Woofstock Cluster to be held November 3-7 in Vallejo is open! There is still plenty of parking available! The RV parking form can be found on Woofstock’s Facebook page.
In true ‘Holley’ fashion, Holley Eldred was trying to save a bunny from her whippet, and unfortunately, the Whippet won, and Holley and the bunny did not fare so well. Holley has had hand surgery and is healing. Once again, this is not keeping her down. She was at Waukesha this past weekend!! Not even hand surgery will keep the hot mess express from the dog show!
Congratulations to Don Sturz on his appointment to judge Best In Show at the January, 2022 Westminster Kennel Club dog show! Westminster will be back in Manhattan in January with breed judging at Pier 36 and group judging at Madison Square Garden. Mark your calendars for January 24-26!!! You can find all judging assignments on the CC website at https://caninechronicle.com/breaking-news/long-island-new-york-school-superintendent-to-select-best-in-show-at-the-146th-annual-westminster-kennel-club-dog-show/
A word of warning to those who were at the Harvest Cluster dog shows in Cabrillo a couple weeks ago: If you purchased Happy Howies Rolled Bait, do NOT use it! A couple of dogs became ill, and there has been one death believed to be a result of tainted bait. Fanciers who purchased this product should refrain from using it and contact the company at customerservice@happyhowies.com.
Clint and Karen Livingston have moved to their new home in Colorado. What a way to recover from the Texas march, my friends! I wish you many happy years in your new home!
Dennis McCoy and Randy Garren have moved on to the next chapter in their lives as well. They have moved from the place they called home for 39 years, Randenn Kennels. Randenn will carry on with its new owners, Evan and Stacy Threlfall. Best wishes to all as you enter the next chapter of your lives!
Congratulations to Nancy Martin on the delivery of the box truck for the Fido Pet Food Bank. Nancy has worked very hard to secure funding and was successful in getting a grant to cover the cost of Fido’s new wheels.
Encouraging thoughts to the Miller family as they fight through difficult times. Harry has had another medical procedure and hopefully will be on the mend very soon. Sadly, Lisa’s cancer returned very soon after her 5-year all clear. You’ve got this, Lisa! We are all pulling for you. The Miller family is strong and vital, and an integral part of our community. Please keep them in your thoughts as they navigate these tough times.
The fancy suffered great loss this past week. Connie Gerstner Miller passed away with dear friends and family at her side while she was in hospice. Connie’s passion for our sport and her dogs was second to none, and she always lit up the room with her vital personality. She was an amazing mentor and was loved by all that knew her. Rest well, my friend. The fancy misses you already.
Don Martin passed away this past week with his wife, Edna, at his side. Don was a long-time Basset Hound breeder and AKC judge. Don will be sorely missed by the fancy. Our sympathies go out to Edna, Heidi, Bryan and Nancy and all of their friends and family.
Happy Anniversary to Chris and Jeff Margeson and Tina Turley-Kocab and Mark Kocab. Best wishes to both happy couples. We hope you have many more joyful years together!
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Glen Lajeski, Roz Kramer, Lisa Bettis, Greg Myers, Michelle Starry, Dale Kaplan, Devon Kipp Levy, Gustavo Molinari, Lisa Miller, Shane Hooper, Taffe McFadden, Brian Almojera, Cheryl Patterson, Rebecca Lynn Arch, Lynn Meyer, Christine Foster Nethery, and Anna Milicia. Remember, my friends, you are NOT getting older, you are getting better!!!
My next stop is Doswell, Virginia for the Keystone Cluster. Stop by the Purina booth for a visit! Be safe out there, my friends and don’t forget the hard-working volunteers that make our shows possible! I look forward to visiting with you soon at a show. Until next time…
