Dog Show Superintendents Association Holds Annual Meeting

(GREENSBORO, NC) The Dog Show Superintendent’s Association (DSSA) annual meeting was held December 4, 2013 in Memphis, TN. The following members were present: President Bob Christiansen (MB-F Dog Shows); Secretary-Treasurer Sharon DelaBarre, Del DelaBarre, and Stacey Martin (BaRay Event Services); Dale Neukom (Roy Jones Dog Shows); Tim James and Terry James (Onofrio Dog Shows); Ed Smizer (Rau Dog Shows); Jack Bradshaw (Bradshaw Dog Shows). Alan Slay represented the American Kennel Club.

Alan Slay gave the group updates on several AKC/Superintendent topics including the status of event application processing, operational aspects of the Owner Handler Series, management and restrictions of multiple events/day, market trends, possible role of a superintendent as a Delegate, communication with clubs, judges, and superintendents, recent Obedience/rally regulations, required notifications and timing for judge changes, and procedures/forms required for reporting dog aggression. The Association also brought new ideas for entry enhancement possibilities with testing at future shows.

The Association is preparing a position paper on Superintendents as Delegates to be released shortly. There was discussion on initiatives and programs where the DSSA could make positive contributions to the sport. An operational aspect for forwarding misdirected entries among the different organizations was discussed. The following officers were elected for 2014: President, Bob Christiansen, MB-F; Secretary/Treasurer, Sharon DelaBarre, BaRay Event Services. Dale Neukom/Roy Jones was elected for a new three-year term to the Executive Committee expiring in 2016.

Formed in 2002, the Dog Show Superintendents Association represents professional AKC licensed superintendents in all important matters impacting superintendents and the Dog Fancy. The DSSA is a group of Professional Superintendents that represents well over 100 years of experience in providing support services to the AKC, show giving clubs and dog show exhibitors.
