A Whippet From Dumfriesshire Wins Reserve Best In Show At Crufts

Hazel, a Whippet from Middlebie, near Lockerbie in Dumfriesshire, has won Reserve Best in Show at Crufts, narrowly missing out on the Best in Show title to a West Highland White Terrier called Devon.

Hazel (Nothing Compares To You At Crosscop), aged two, won Best in Group in the Hound Group today (Sunday 13th March) and returned to the Genting Arena at the NEC in Birmingham for a place in the final of the 125th anniversary of Crufts with her owner Charlie Donaldson, a 19 year old member of the Young Kennel Club. People around Britain and the world watched as Hazel, who was bred by a Kennel Club Assured Breeder, also from Dumfriesshire, was awarded Reserve Best in Show, as the final was live on Channel 4.

Almost 22,000 dogs have competed over the four days for one of just seven places in the Crufts final and a chance to win the most celebrated title in the world of dogs.

Proud owner Charlie Donaldson, said: “I can’t believe it, I am over the moon.  I never expected this to happen.  Hazel is one in a million and I can’t thank enough anyone who has supported us, it really means everything to me and my family.”

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “Congratulations to Hazel for winning Reserve Best in Show today – it was an exciting final and she certainly rose to the challenge.

“Crufts celebrates healthy, happy dogs and recognises the special and unique bond between dogs and their owners. Hazel is such a lovely dog who clearly loves being in the show ring and has a great relationship with her owner.

“Hazel and Charlie should be very proud of reaching the Best in Show final and taking home Reserve Best in Show – it’s an incredible achievement and not one many get to experience, especially considering Charlie is so young.”
