Update: Positive Canine Influenza Case in Georgia Identified as H3N2

Last week, The University of Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory reported the first positive case of Canine Influenza in Georgia. After further testing, the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory determined that the H3N2 strain was responsible for the positive case. The H3N2 is the “new” strain of the virus that is responsible for the outbreak of Canine Influenza in the midwest.

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine prepared a Frequently Asked Questions list for pet owners. They noted that 80% of healthy adult dogs that are exposed to the Canine Flu will contract the flu and that it is contracted from respiratory secretions. However, the majority of dogs that contract the flu will recover from it. For more information, check out the University of Georgia Canine Influenza Facts here.
