Denise Yates Receives The Walter R. Fletcher Memorial Award
FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE FEBRUARY 9, 2020
The Welsh Terrier Record Holders are pleased to announce Denise Yates, WTRH Founder and Author, is the 2020 Recipient of The Walter R. Fletcher Memorial Award of the Dog Writers Association of America. Sponsored by The Westminster Kennel Club in memory of the legendary dog show reporter Walter Fletcher, this prestigious annual award goes to the writer with exemplary coverage of dog shows in America. Denise Yates will be honored with a reserved seat in the Walter Fletcher Memorial Chair for both nights of the 2020 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The chair is in the front row of the working press section on the arena floor of Madison Square Garden.
Upon acceptance of the award at a banquet traditionally held on the Sunday Eve of the televised Westminster Dog Show, Denise Yates remarked, “I am absolutely thrilled to receive The Walter R. Fletcher Memorial Award for my work on behalf of all who admire Welsh Terriers and dog shows in America, and thank the judges for the Dog Writers Association of America and The Westminster Kennel Club for this tremendous honor. It is humbling to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Mr. Fletcher, who covered dog shows for The New York Times for more than 60 years, and to sit Monday and Tuesday evenings in his chair from which he received a standing ovation at his last professional coverage of the Westminster Dog Show in 1995, referring to it ‘the most touching moment of my life.’ I will wear the purple and gold colors of Westminster those evenings to pay tribute to the occasion. I have been attending the Westminster Dog Show for decades. To sit on the floor of Madison Square Garden and watch all of the phenomenal dogs compete in the Groups and ultimately for Best In Show is an experience I will treasure forever.”
Welsh Terrier Record Holders was founded by Denise Yates in 2018, and highlights every Welsh Terrier record holder in the breed’s history, including holders of record around the globe. The historical website, followed by the sporting world professionals, historians, and dog enthusiasts in more than 50 countries, promotes the noblest of the Welsh Terrier: The Best of A Breed. The WRTH Official Crest, designed by Emma Kesler, Art Director for Welsh Terrier Record Holders, contains a trophy at the helm topped by a Welsh Terrier in profile; the shield of the flag of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales; and beautiful foliage for the mantling. Hand-lettering, designed by Marika Kesler, in a font based on Welsh stone carvings, indicates the motto—Urddasol, Dewr, Diflino—Welsh expressions selected by Denise Yates, which when translated, characterize three traits of the Welsh Terrier breed: Noble, Intrepid, Indefatigable.
