American German Shepherd Dog Charitable Foundation Continues Matching Funds to Support Hemangiosarcoma Research

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the health of all dogs, announces that donations in support of its Hemangiosarcoma Research Initiative will be matched by the American German Shepherd Dog Charitable Foundation (AGSDCF) up to $33,000. The match is part of AGSDCF’s three-year, $100,000 pledge to fight this deadly canine cancer.

Since 1995, CHF and its donors have invested over $3.8 million in 27 canine health research grants to study hemangiosarcoma. This cancer of the cells that line blood vessels affects dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds, including mixed breeds. CHF’s Hemangiosarcoma Research Initiative was launched in 2018 to focus fundraising and research efforts on improving diagnostic and treatment options for this cancer.

“The AKC Canine Health Foundation, the American German Shepherd Dog Charitable Foundation, and most dog lovers know how devastating hemangiosarcoma can be,” says Dr. Calvin Carpenter, CHF Executive Director. “We are committed to funding quality research with real potential to advance the clinical diagnosis and treatment of this aggressive cancer.”

In 2020 alone, CHF has awarded over $400,000 in funding for three hemangiosarcoma research studies, including continuation of the Shine On Project at the University of Minnesota, study of a blood test to discriminate hemangiosarcoma from other splenic masses, and exploration of how the immune system promotes tumor growth and inflammation in hemangiosarcoma. Knowledge gained from these research studies and others funded through CHF will help all dogs live longer, healthier lives. Those interested in supporting the Hemangiosarcoma Research Initiative should visit akcchf.org/match.
