New NY Law Allows Dogs in Some Dining Establishments

AKC Legislative Alert

A new law was enacted yesterday by the New York Governor that permits dogs in outdoor areas of eating establishments in the state, as long as certain conditions are met.

The AKC supported this measure, which allows responsible dog owners more opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities and socialization with their well-behaved pets.

Under the new law, which takes effect immediately, dogs are permitted in public “outdoor dining areas” if the owner chooses to allow dogs and the dogs are kept on leash or in a pet carrier.  The dogs are not permitted on benches, seating or other fixtures.

The dining area must also follow specific guidelines, including having a separate entrance for diners bringing their dogs, and posting clear signage stating that companion dogs are allowed.

Current laws related to service animals still apply and are not impacted by this new law.

The AKC thanks Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature for their support of this measure.  Read AKC’s blog about this legislation.
