Table Talk • October 28, 2026

I am thankful to be part of a community that consistently rallies in support of our own.  Last November, Matt and Susan Townsend thought the Leonberger Triple Crown would be Susan’s last due to Stage 5 kidney failure.  Once again, someone in our sport proved to be nothing short of amazing.  In June, Jennifer Stevens rose to the occasion and donated one of her kidneys to Susan.  Fast-forward to the 2026 Leonberger Triple Crown earlier this month:  Susan proudly exhibited her Leonberger thanks to Jen’s generosity.  We are all lucky to have each other.  Let us never forget that fact.

We often talk about being kind and welcoming to new exhibitors. The first show experience could be the difference between a new person returning, or deciding showing dogs is not for them.  This is an appeal to the judging community to do the same for our aspiring judges.  Our sport needs knowledgeable, ethical judges willing to put the work in to perfect their craft.  I have had a couple of conversations with new judges, who are only approved for their breed, or a couple of a breeds.  They find themselves in between the exhibitor and judging communities, and they felt left out as a result.  One individual mentioned that when she went to sit in the judge’s seating area for the groups, she did not feel welcome, and the other judges did not speak to her.  If we see an individual alone, why not approach them and welcome them?  It could be the beginning of a new friendship!  Minimally, it will make that new, aspiring judge want to continue.

At the October AKC Board of Directors meeting, the requirement of a $50 deposit for filing a complaint at an event was approved.  This requirement is effective November 1, 2026.  If the Event Committee proceeds to a hearing, the deposit will be returned to the complainant.  If the Event Committee determines that the complaint has no merit, the deposit will be retained by the event-giving club.  Questions should be directed to compliance@akc.org.  Early feedback from show-giving clubs is positive.

Earlier this week, I saw an incredible image of a young lady sitting ringside intensely studying what was happening in the ring.  When I shared the post, I received several responses from friends–several of them judges–saying they have had this young lady in their ring, and she always does a wonderful job.  This young lady has a bright future in our sport!  I believe that junior and adult exhibitors alike can learn from this image. Instead of sulking and walking away when you lose, stay ringside and watch those who beat you.  Follow those that you see consistently win, and watch them.

Terry Zhao has checked a very exciting item off his bucket list.  Skydiving at 14,000 feet, and he lived to share the excitement!  Next up for Terry is 18,000 feet.  Way to go Terry!  You are living your best life!

Earlier this month I mentioned in this column that the Devon Dog Show Association expressed the desire to move their dog show to Macungie Memorial Park on the Saturday between Hatboro Dog Club and Montgomery County KC.  The show committee of Montgomery County KC has reviewed Devon’s request, and communicated to Devon that they continue to believe that there is inadequate space within the Macungie grounds to safely and adequately accommodate Devon’s show.

AKC Club Development is currently accepting applications for the 8 Regional NOHS events for 2028.  Clubs interested in holding one of these events should email clubdevelopment@akc.org with club name, event date/location, contact, superintendent, a brief statement regarding why the club desires to hold a regional event, and any other relevant information.

The AKC is also entertaining applications for the 8 Regional Junior Showmanship events for 2028.  Clubs interested in hosting an AKC Regional Junior Showmanship event in conjunction with an event should contact juniors@akc.org to request an application.

Happy Anniversary to Donna and Paul Ernst and Janice Hayes and Eric Ciceron.  May the upcoming year bring you amazing journeys and happiness.

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Danielle Sartain, Michael Brantley, Andrew Mueller, Juliet Clendenon, Debbie Burke Scott, Alaina House, Jinece Reese, Linda Clark, Greg Chan, and Anna Gracie.  Best wishes for a great year ahead filled with beautiful dogs, and wonderful memories.

Here are some words of encouragement for this week:  Don’t be discouraged and quit!  It is often the last key in the bunch that opens the door.

I look forward to seeing those of you who will be in Fort Wayne for the Old Fort Cluster this week!  If you cannot be there, keep your eyes on the Canine Chronicle Facebook page for daily in-ring group coverage. Be safe out there my friends!  Until next time…
