Table Talk • March 11, 2026

I always enjoy seeing my friends while I am in Raleigh for the Tarheel Circuit! The cluster always draws very deep quality, and the volunteers work very hard to make the show special. Several specialties and supported entries ensure that the depth of quality at the breed level is outstanding.

While I was there, a new exhibitor was at the Purina booth. She introduced herself to a judge who was visiting with me. The new exhibitor explained that this judge was the first judge she ever showed to, and because of her positive experience, she is now “hooked”. She was so excited about all the shows she has entered, and the wonderful experience she is having. I beg all judges and exhibitors to think about this person’s experience when interacting with new exhibitors at the shows.

It was great to see Terry Stacy out and about–and visiting at the Tarheel Circuit. Terry was smiling ear-to-ear and so happy to be back amongst his fellow fanciers.

While it can be somewhat frustrating–for some–to spend time helping new exhibitors, I can assure you it is worth it! The first experience can either draw them in or chase them away, and this is something that all of us–exhibitors, judges, officials, vendors, etc.–need to remember.

Many of our US friends were across the pond representing America at Crufts. I have major FOMO watching all the videos of the rings, the shopping, and the camaraderie. Hopefully, I will be able to check this amazing experience off my bucket list at some point in the future.

Unfortunately, the Pastoral Group at Crufts was missing the German Shepherd Dog because the post-breed vet check was not passed. This is very unfortunate for the breed since representation at Crufts is quite important to fanciers. I cannot imagine the disappointment for the exhibitor, breeder, owners, and breed judge.

This week’s meeting of the AKC Delegate body is quite important as vote for the Class of 2030 Board of Directors will be held. Candidates up for election are Carl Ashby, Karen Burgess, Dominic Palleschi Carota, Patricia Cruz, Sue Goldberg, Jason Hoke, Laurie Maulucci, Lisa Peterson, and Thomas Powers. Best of luck to all!

Many fanciers will be heading to the Kentuckiana cluster directly from the Tar Heel. Please remember the building is on a tight turn-around–and there is construction. Please come with patience and grace, as the volunteers are working very hard to ensure the best possible experience for all! Be sure to keep your eyes on the Kentuckiana Cluster Facebook page for updates about logistics, move-in, etc. Once again, the cluster boasts a huge entry, topping out at 3,549 on Saturday.

Those who have entered the Working Dog Show on Wednesday should note that the start time is scheduled for 11:00 AM.

I am looking forward to visiting with some interesting people at the shows during my Table Talk Like coverage from the Kentucky Expo Center. I think it’s going to be four days of fun and beautiful dogs. Please be sure to stop by to see me to share your wins, your journey, and your stories! Those unable to attend might enjoy the opportunity to see what we are up to, and The Canine Chronicle Facebook page will have our live coverage posted throughout the cluster.  Content will also be posted on Canine Chronicle TV at caninechronicle.tv and our website at caninechronicle.com.

Happy anniversary to lovebirds David and Kristyn Stout. Best wishes for many more happy, successful years ahead.

I was glad to hear that Karen Kurtzner is on the mend after a health scare, and a visit to the emergency room. While they are not sure what was wrong, fortunately a heart attack has been ruled out. Feel better Karen and we will see you soon!

I’d like to share Omar Gonazlez’ perspective of what a true breeder is, as these words could not be more accurate (IMHO):

“A true breeder is a custodian of a breed. They study the standard, not as a marketing tool but as a blueprint. Whether guided by the standards of organizations such as the American Kennel Club, they understand the standard represents decades, sometimes centuries of selective preservation.”

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Heather Johnson, Tara Martin Rowell, Chip Rainwater, Kellie Fitzgerald, Lauren Portal, Diana Wilson, Jann Butler, Jean Gauchat, and Lindsay Gorder. Cheers to one and all on your very special day!

Remember my friends! No one will ever love you as much as your dogs!!

Be safe out there, my friends. I look forward to seeing everyone in Louisville!! Until next time…
