Julie shared the following story about showing this particular weekend: ”I was 15 years old at the time, so of course, my mother drove me to the shows. Those were the days of huge Poodle entries, and the classes were always stacked with top handlers. These were 5-point majors in the classes, and I had no idea who the judge was. From Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to Belleville, Illinois, it took us a bit, passing through St. Louis. My mom made a wrong turn, and we found ourselves in East St. Louis, which at the time had the second-highest crime rate in the U.S. There were police cars parked along the streets, and the police had shotguns standing up between the seats! My mother was lost, and she boldly pulled off onto a side street and saw a young man working on his car. She got out of the car and gave him $10 to drive us back to the interstate. My mother had no fear.”
