AKC Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jerry Klein Shares Latest on COVID-19 and Your Dog

AKC Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jerry Klein recently appeared in an informative episode discussing whether or not your dog can get the Coronavirus on an “Ask the Expert” segment on AKC.TV.  Among the important topics discussed:

  • As of recent reports by IDEXX Labs, thousands of dogs and cats have been tested and found that they CANNOT pass COVID-19 on to humans.
  • COVID-19 can only use humans as a host, therefore dogs and cats are unable to contract it. However, dogs have their own strains of Coronavirus that directly affects them. Symptoms include gastroenteritis such as bloody diarrhea and vomiting, or respiratory tract problems.
  • Dr. Jerry Klein advises keeping a first aid kit at home for pets and humans, respectively. This kit should include a thermometer, which you should use to keep track of your body temperature during this time. Those who get the virus report high fevers (above 100 degrees for humans) as one of their symptoms.
  • If you test positive for COVID-19, you should follow basic hygiene precautions such as washing your hands with soap and water before and after touching your pet.
  • Plan ahead and make sure you have another family member or friend who can care for your pet if you fall ill with the virus and are unable to care for them.
