Westminster KC Issues Statement Regarding NY Times Dog Poisoning Article
Responding to the article in the New York Times that speculated about the supposed poisoning of a dog at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show on February 13, 2013, the club has issued a statement regarding the report. The statement from David Frei reads:
We have never, to our knowledge, had an incident at our show where a dog has become ill or was harmed as a result of being poisoned. We are ultra-cautious to the point where we do not allow dogs to be off lead at any time while at our show. After a conversation with the co-owner of the dog in question, it was established that the dog left Georgia on Monday and flew to New York, he was exhibited at our show on Tuesday, and flew to Denver on Wednesday morning where he subsequently became ill on Saturday. Unfortunately, no autopsy was performed, so there are a lot of unanswered questions. No other animal which attended our show was reported to our show veterinarians with any incident of serious illness. We have been made aware that no rodent poison is used at the Piers and pest control is maintained through trapping.
The dog that is the subject of the article is the Samoyed GCH CH Polar Mist Cruz’N T’Party At Zamosky owned by E. Widjaja & L. Blue and handled by Robert Chaffin. The NYTimes reporter received quotes from several sources and the article suggests the dog was poisoned by animal rights activists at the 2013 Westminster Kennel Club. The article, in our opinion, is highly speculative.
