Table Talk – November 22, 2018

By Deb Cooper

Today I traveled from Tucson, Arizona where I attended the Coyote Cluster at the Pima County Fairgrounds to Chandler, Arizona where I will attend the Fiesta Cluster.  The entry at the Coyote Cluster was down a bit, but the entry at the Fiesta Cluster on their new show date at their new show venue is up nearly 40%!  I am sure that the fact the Turkey Circuit moved their show dates by a week helped the Fiesta entry.

The indoor facility at the Pima County Fairgrounds where the Coyote Cluster is held has been updated significantly.  Unfortunately one of the updates was re-painting the floor. This caused it to be quite slick as they would not allow mats on the floor.  Group judging was scheduled to be indoors, but due to dogs slipping the club decided to move all group judging outdoors under cover.  The cluster committee and superintendent worked very hard to minimize inconvenience to the exhibitors.  One of the things the cluster changed last year was moving the vendors indoors. This was a welcome change according to the vendors I talked to during the circuit.  Unfortunately for the vendors, moving the groups outside decreased the foot traffic in the building during the groups.  I am sure the cluster will address the floor issue so group judging will be moved back indoors next year.

I was so pleased to see that the Columbus, Ohio shows had an increase in their entries this year. They had and entry of 1800+ on their largest day this past weekend. The circuit is held at the Ohio State Fairgrounds.

Entries for the AKC National Championship sponsored by Royal Canin closed this past Wednesday.  Held annually in Orlando, this year’s entry of 4,803 dogs/8600 entries makes it one of the largest shows held in the United States.  Unfortunately many folks who thought they had reserved grooming there had their grooming fees refunded to them with a note that an error was made and grooming was sold out.  We can only hope these folks will receive help from the show committee to find suitable grooming space upon arrival.

Entries for the all-breed shows preceding the AKC National Championship show close today!!  Remember MB-F is the show superintendent, not Onofrio.

Congratulations to Don and Liz Powell on the birth of their baby boy, Colton Michael Powell, who was born on November 15. This healthy baby boy weighed in at 8 lbs. 6 oz.  Best wishes for many healthy, happy years to come for the newest Powell!

Kate Batzner and Mike Berry will tie the knot this coming Saturday in Southern California.  I am sorry I cannot be with you guys on your special day and wish you many years of love and prosperity.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of the great Pekingese, Ch. Palacegarden Malachy. We all remember his BIS win at the 2012 Westminster Kennel Club with David Fitzpatrick on the end of the lead. His accomplishments in the ring and as a sire will make his memory live on forever. The Canine Chronicle expresses sincere condolences to Malachy’s breeders, Jean and Jim Smith and owners, Iris Love, Sandra Middlebrooks, and David Fitzpatrick.

I was saddened to hear of the death of Larry Ward, a fellow member of the International Kennel Club of Chicago.  Larry passed peacefully with loved ones at his side.  Our most sincere condolences to his sister, Mardell, and other friends and family during this time of sorrow.

Robin and Cindy Stansell were in Japan judging a Boxer Specialty.  Jim Ham was off to Korea judging, and Desi Murphy was off to Holland to judge one of the largest Bull Terrier shows in the world. We can’t wait to hear about your entries as well as other interesting stories about your trips!

Celebrating birthdays this week are:  Carla Link Vaughn, Olga Navarro, Ray Harrington, Courtney Bastian, my favorite police officer on this planet, Elizabeth Salewsky, Jeff Lawrence, and Tami Luddeke.

I would like to wish all of my dog family a Happy Thanksgiving.  Have a safe, enjoyable holiday with friends and family!

Wherever your travels may take you, please be careful, and remember to be kind to that new exhibitor who could really use your help and support.

Until next time…
