Table Talk
The Idaho/Montana death march is done for another year and the southern death march is about to begin starting with the Oklahoma City cluster this weekend. I wish all my tired friends the best of luck as they make the trek either to the South, the West or the Central states. Travel safe and keep an eye on the dogs and humans in the heat. I am off to Ventura, CA and hope to catch up with many of you there!
The Southern Handlers Charity League (SHCL) will be quite active at the OKC cluster this year and I encourage all that will be in attendance to support their fund-raising efforts. They will be holding a fun match on Saturday evening after Best in Show with all proceeds to go to the SHCL. I became familiar with the SHCL back in Monroe, Louisiana several years ago when they had their raffle and crate dolly races, along with pajama day! What fun that was! SHCL has been in existence for about 18 years now. It all started when a handler was on the road and, while on the road, her brother died. A group of southern handlers banded together and raised funds to help pay for the funeral. Pat and Ruth Booker and the Bayou Kennel Club have been instrumental in the development and continuation of this small group of handlers and dog fanciers who are very passionate about raising funds and helping those southern dog fanciers in need. The group has donated somewhere in the neighborhood of $200,000 to fellow fanciers who have found themselves in need for one reason or another. They have helped people who have been impacted by fire, tornado, illness, and death of loved ones. This is just a few of the situations in which SHCL has assisted those in need. The SHCL fund raising efforts are fun and draw the fancy together. Having participated in a couple of their fund raising events, I can attest to the fun and spirited nature of their activities. The current board of directors of SHCL consists of David Williams, Robert Chaffin, Terri Galle, Jill Bell and Ruth Booker. Carl Sanders and Pat Booker were board members until their passing. The only requirement to receive assistance from SHCL is that the individual must be involved in the sport of purebred dogs and be from the southern region. Please reach out to one of the board members if you would like to become involved in this great cause.
Larry Sinclair retired from judging with his final Hound group assignment in Great Falls, Montana. We wish Larry and Janet many happy, healthy years ahead.
I was saddened to hear about the death of Bernie Schwartz. Bernie was a fellow International Kennel Club of Chicago committee member. One of my favorite memories of Bernie and Fran was eating Manny’s corned beef sandwiches for lunch during the IKC cluster. I believe that Bernie and Fran were married for over 65 years. My thoughts and prayers are with Fran and her family at this difficult time.
Celebrating birthdays this week are Toddie Clark, Robin Greenslade, Marietta Singleton, Tracy Szaras, Anita O’Berg, Angela Booth, George Marquis, Terri Galle, Lisa Porter, and Sharon Witherspoon. Happy Birthday everyone!
Enjoy the summer months, my friends, and don’t forget to be kind to your fellow exhibitors. Give those pooches an extra hug…
Until next time…
