OptiGen Inherited Cataract Test Now Available

Last week OptiGen announced that they are now offering Inherited Cataract tests for Staffrodshire bull Terriers, Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, and Australian Shepherds.

One mutation, HSF4-1, is found in Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Boston Terriers, and French Bulldogs. It is the mutation for juvenile cataracts. The cataracts are usually symmetrical in both eyes. Another mutation, HSF4-2, is found in Australian Shepherds. This mutation is different than the HSF4-1, because dogs that carrier just one copy of the mutation are more likely to develop cataracts.

OptiGen advises that the high frequency of the mutations and their significant association with cataracts call for careful planning of breeding of dogs with this mutation.

For more information, read OptiGen’s entire announcement here.
