Life With Pat

The Maryland Blue Crab Cluster isn’t just another group of shows, it is a special cluster offering entertainment and education to exhibitors, judges, and the junior handlers. Chaired by the hard working Lisa Miller, this outstanding group of shows starts out with the Potomac Hound Show and then continues into four all breed shows over the course of the long weekend.

What makes this cluster unique is the food and entertainment. The first night begins with exhibitors having fun on the grounds. Entertainment includes a hypnotist, a live band, and an American Idol-style contest.

The second night features an outside buffet with all the crab you can eat. Diners include both  exhibitors and judges. This feast is complete with wooden mallets to crush your crab shells and bibs for everyone. There is also a live band at this dinner for those who wish to dance or just enjoy the festivities.

During the cluster, people are asked to donate clothes that are then sold. This is all for a good cause as the income is donated to Take The Lead. You would be amazed by this event as this yard sale brings in very good clothing donated by exhibitors and judges. It’s a great place to shop if you are in the mood for a deal!

The Junior Handling Clinic at this show has become an annual event. Every year an AKC Rep gives Juniors a clinic which is well-attended. The reps do a great job and the kids love the experience.

This cluster, held in Bel Alton, MD, has entries between 1,500 and 1,700 dogs. This year’s shows were dedicated to the late D. Roy Holloway. The shows were hosted by Southern Maryland Kennel Club on July 2 and 3 and Rock Creek Kennel Club on July 4 and 5. Nothing could be more American on July 4th than munching on blue crabs.
