Tasty, Healthy Snacks For Your Dog

By Jill Kessler Miller

Treats, treats, treats: Gotta have them. In the house, in the car, in our pockets, at the shows, in training. When giving treats to young dogs there’s not a lot of concern about calories or fat content; but our older dogs often get the short end of the stick when it comes to getting their fair share.  I am personally not a fan of many of the low-cal/low-fat treats, as they appear to be pressed cardboard and the dogs tell me they’re tasteless. Then of course there are the concerns about where are the treat’s ingredients are sourced from, and where are they manufactured. And some that fit the bill are crazy expensive!

I was recently sent a sample bag of watermelon flavor Skinny Minis by Fruitables. I have clients with older dogs that don’t know what treats to give them when training and treating their young dogs. I found this new product to meet all my personal criteria—USA sourced and made, small with a softer density but not too mushy for pockets or fingers, and they smell great to my sensitive nose. At only 2 ½ calories each they can be given with a freer hand, and with pumpkin being the first ingredient they’re also easy on the stomach . I’m also happy to report that were liked across the board by older, finicky dogs, and they are reasonably priced.
