Table Talk – August 29, 2018

Another Santa Barbara week comes to a close and as I am writing this weekly update to you, I feel so thankful for my involvement in this sport.  I am honored that many of you look forward to my weekly column, and I feel so fortunate that I am able to keep in contact with so many people that have become like family to me.  To me, the camaraderie and friendship makes my involvement in purebred dogs worth the blood, sweat and tears I have invested in it.  I do believe that each of us should take time once in awhile to ask ourselves why we do what we do week-in and week-out.  If learning, teaching and establishing new friendships is not part of why you are involved in this sport, I encourage you to re-evaluate your priorities.

Getting involved with a purebred dog club and hosting a show is hard work, but there are so many friendships that can come from such an effort.  Volunteering to assist with handling seminars, breed-related seminars, junior showmanship clinics, etc. is another very rewarding way to give back to the sport and can result in new friendships as well as open new avenues to you for your involvement in the sport.  If you have not done so already, think about finding a way to give back to the sport we all love.

I have had a few discussions with handlers over the past few weeks about issues surrounding their assistants leaving their employment and then either soliciting or agreeing to work for existing clients of the handler.  It is unfortunate that we need to protect ourselves against disappointment or conflict, but times have changed, and I do believe it is necessary.  Handlers should consider an employment agreement that includes a non-compete clause.  It will then be very clear what is expected from the assistant and what is considered acceptable behavior.  Do not assume the unwritten!

I heard that our dear friend Risky Molnar is in remission!!!!!  That is such great news and I wish you strength and perseverance as you enter your next stage of treatment for cancer.  As I am sure you all know, Risky has spent a great deal of her time working with children with cancer and has given so much support.  It is her turn to now get that support from those who love and adore her!  You’ve got this Risky!

Santa Barbara was Kate and Mike Berry’s last weekend of shows on the West Coast.  They are moving to South Carolina to start a handling business of their own.  Best wishes to Kate and Mike in this next chapter of their life.

I hear Bruce Schwartz is off to China this week to recover from all his hard work at the Santa Barbara cluster!  Safe travels, my friend.  Enjoy!

Jason Hoke will be representing the USA next year while judging at Crufts 2019.  Congratulations, Jason! I am sure you will make us proud.

Jane and Greg Myers are celebrating their 27thwedding anniversary!!!  I cannot believe it is possible that you guys have been married for 27 years!  I wish you many more years of health, love and happiness my friends.

I was sorry to hear that Golden Retriever fancier Cathy Meddaugh lost her husband this past week. We are thinking about you at this difficult time, Cathy.  Our sympathy to you, your family and friends.

There will be a service for the recently departed Clint Harris held on Saturday, October 27that 5 PM at the Captain’s Quarters on River Road in Louisville, Kentucky. For more information, you can contact Clint’s daughter, Barbie Johnson, atbjrngma@gmail.com

Finally, our friend Michael Shepherd suffered a heart attack and after receiving a procedure to insert a couple of stints he is doing great. Thank goodness!  Heal quickly, my friend! We want you back in the ring soon feeling happy and healthy.

Celebrating birthdays this week are:  Faith Ott, Jenny Roller, Dennis Sullivan, Chuck Suda, Tim Terella, Luke Seidlitz, Virginia Murray, Mike Berry, Peggy Beisel-Mcilwaine, Lisa Welch, Eddie Dziuk, Beep Lee and Richard Camacho.

Be safe my friends and I hope you have a chance to enjoy some of the Labor Day weekend with friends and family.  Please be kind to each other and try to give back!  Until next time…
