Table Talk August 28, 2019

The Santa Barbara Kennel Club celebrated their 100th Anniversary at their shows held this past weekend at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in beautiful Santa Barbara, California. This year Simi Valley Kennel Club held their shows on Thursday and Friday and the Santa Barbara shows were held Saturday and Sunday. This differs from the format held the last several years, which was Friday-Monday. I believe the entry benefited from this format change. This was the first year for Santa Barbara’s new show chair, Bruce Schwartz, who took over for Anita O’Berg. A congratulatory shout-out to Bruce for a job well done! Anita’s presence was certainly missed at this year’s show, but I am glad that she and her hubby were able to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary at the Grand Hotel in Michigan, as opposed to celebrating at a dog show! We all hope to see Anita back at the shows next year. I have to say that in all of the years that I have attended these shows, I do not recall ever having weather so perfect!

The Santa Barbara cluster has many special attractions including a BullyGanza, a Sighthound Spectacular, and a Foreign-Bred competition. In addition to these special attractions, the Breeders Showcase was held on Saturday night, as in previous years. There are many opportunities for exhibitors to showcase their dogs over the weekend. If you have not attended this cluster in the past, I recommend you give it a try. The cluster works very hard to offer a positive exhibitor experience.

I had the opportunity this past weekend to visit with Gwen Lucoff of Zuma Dobermans who lives in Malibu and was severely impacted by the fires. Gwen lost two homes and a condominium. She did not, however, lose her dogs. Gwen had planned for the potential of evacuation due to the fires by having a fully stocked trailer, and a plan for their exit. She remained calm when informed of the necessity to evacuate and attributes her ability to quickly evacuate to her early planning which included maintaining that fully stocked trailer.

Val Nunes and Amy Rutherford were off to Iceland after the Santa Barbara shows. With an early Monday flight, they had very little turn-around time, but a trip to Iceland is well worth that hectic schedule!

I hear Shea and Tiffany Skinner were in Hawaii on a much-deserved vacation. Safe travels, my friends. Enjoy your holiday!

I am also told that Luke and Rowen Baggenstos were also enjoying some R&R at Yellowstone with their kids. Enjoy your family trip, my friends!

I am sorry to report that Risky Molnar’s cancer has returned and she is undergoing another round of chemotherapy. I know everyone joins me in wishing Risky well with her treatment. Risky, you’ve got this! We are all thinking about you and we are here for you. If anyone would like to offer supportive thoughts, please reach out to Risky via Facebook Messenger.

I am pleased to report that as of August, 2019, the AKC Canine Health Foundation has met the canine cancer match! Donations to canine cancer research totaling $250,000 will be matched by the American Kennel Club (AKC) with an equal donation to CHF for canine health research. Thanks to donor support for the canine cancer match challenge, the Canine Health Foundation is funding cancer research with many grants such as:

- Comparative Brain Tumor Consortium (CBTC) Meningioma Pathology Board

- Clinical Trial for Evaluation of Propranolol and Doxorubicin in the treatment of Canine Hemangiosarcoma

- Precision Medicine for Canine Lymphoma

- NF-kappaB Inactivation Enhances Apoptosis in Canine Osteosarcoma Cells

The Poodle fancy lost an icon this past week. It is with sadness that I report that Mary Ellen Fishler passed away. Mary Ellen is known for her Toy Poodles bred under the Camelot prefix, and her work with the Poodle Club of America. We want to express our condolences to all of Mary Ellen’s friends and family at this most difficult time. She will be sorely missed by the fancy.

Celebrating anniversaries this week are: Michelle and Richard Hanson, Kay and Doug Belter, and Kim and Tony Calvacca. May you all enjoy many more happy, healthy years together!

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Ric Routledge, Faith Ott, Tim Terella, Luke Seidlitz, Virginia Murray, Adam Bernardin, Mike Berry, Peggy Beisel-Mcilwaine, Lisa Welch, Tanner Congleton, Kathy Harrington, and Eric Peterson.

For those of you attending the upcoming Somerset Hills Kennel Club show, don’t forget Take The Lead will be holding a fundraising Gala on Saturday night after Best In Show at the Ryland Inn. Tickets are $100 per person. You can get your tickets by calling 800-814-1123 or visiting their website at www.takethelead.org.

Please remember to thank those volunteers who work so hard to put on the shows you attend week-in and week-out. I encourage everyone to join the entertainer Pink’s online challenge: Go ONE day without criticizing someone!

Be safe out there, my friends! Until next time…
