Table Talk – June 27, 2018

My May/June death march from California to Montana is over and I’m glad to be home for 9 days!  The next stop for me is the Summerfest circuit in Southern California.  This is the cluster’s third year at this venue, and my first time attending.   Here’s hoping for weather that is not too hot.

I think we all agree that both the National Owner Handler Series and Junior Showmanship competitions are critical to maintaining the growth of our sport.  As such, I believe it is important that judges asked to adjudicate these events demonstrate patience and kindness when interacting with the exhibitors.  A child or a new handler who has a bad experience may not return thereby defeating the purpose of these events, part of which is to bring in new and younger exhibitors to our sport.  I am not judging anyone for being disinterested in judging these events, however, if you agree to the assignment, please be kind to those that entered to you.

I am sad to report that the fancy has lost longtime judge and Hound aficionado Dr. James Edwards. Jim passed away in his sleep with his family by his side.

We also lost longtime Papillion fancier Suzanne Johnson. Many of you remember Suzanne at the shows with Barbara Gossett. She was a great supporter of the breed and will be sorely missed.  Dalmatian fancier Gay Stryker also passed away this past week.  Our thoughts are with the family and friends of these wonderful dog people at this most difficult time.  They will be missed.

The untimely death of “Bernie”, GCh. Pequest Feel the Burn reminds us all that life as we know it can change at any moment.  “Bernie” was at the height of his career when he passed away due to complications from a dental procedure.  I know everyone joins me in wishing David Fitzpatrick and his co-owners our sincere sympathies at this difficult time.  Give your dogs a special hug, guys; who knows how many more opportunities you will have to do so.

Our best wishes to Risky Molnar who is fighting Leukemia.  Risky has expended so much time and energy helping children with cancer and she now needs our positive thoughts and energy.  Risky, we are all here for you and we know you’ve got this!

It was great to hear that Moe Miyagawa had his first outing since his illness.  Keep it up, Moe, we are all pulling for you my friend.  2018 marks 50 years that he has been involved with Doberman Pinschers!

Several of our friends will be traveling to Sweden to judge.  Peter Green and Beth Sweigert, Bobby Paust and Bob Indeglia will be making the trip.  Also traveling to Sweden is Patty Keenan who will be chauffeured by handler and tour guide extraordinaire Per Ingar Rismyr.  I hear Bobby Paust will be stopping off in Ireland to judge before he returns home.

Jason Hoke continues his worldwide tour, this time judging in Budapest, Hungary.  Robin and Cindy Stansell have returned from their trip to judge in Korea.

I wish a very happy 50th Anniversary to my friends, Dave and Pam Peat. May you have many more years of health and happiness together.

I have written to you previously about the Fido food bank that provides pet food and supplies to the elderly.  Without this wonderful program, many elderly would not be able to keep their pets.  This past weekend in Oregon, fanciers Shea and Tiffany Skinner and Nancy Martin put on one heck of a party to raise money for this terrific program.  Kudos to all for a great event that raised over $1600 to assist Fido in providing food and supplies for those in need.  I hear that great fun was had by all!

Celebrating birthdays this week are:  Joan Katz, Sulie Greendale-Paveza, Anita O’Berg, David Haddock, Judy Meitin, Angela Booth, Maripi Wooldridge (happy 60th my friend!!), Marietta Singleton, Robin Greenslade, Bruce Schwartz (looking forward to celebrating with you, my friend), Trazy Szaras, Lisa Porter, Terri Galle, George Marquis and Rachel Corbin.

Please don’t forget that very important act of kindness to a “newbie”.  Also, remember, our dogs cannot say no!  Read the signs if your dog is trying to tell you they are hot, tired, or don’t feel well:  They count on us to do what is best for them.

I look forward to seeing you all down the road.  Please reach out to me if there is a birthday, anniversary or trip that you’d like to share with our community.

Be safe, my friends… Until next time!!
