Table Talk

I am hearing so many stories about our friends that have experienced great loss as a result of the Northern California wildfires. Randy Pompkin, the mobile vet who does hip and elbow exams at several of the California shows, lost his home. Carolyn Lockhart, one of the founding members of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, lost her home.

Patti Meyer was dragged from her home in her pajamas. She lost everything including 8 Bernese Mountain Dogs, 4 Bernese Mountain Dog puppies and 2 Miniature Dachshunds.

David and Jan Bruce, breeders of Cocker Spaniels and Shetland Sheepdogs and owners of David Bruce Winery (makers of outstanding Pinot and Chardonnay), have lost at least 5 acres of vineyards thus far.

I cannot imagine the pain and sorrow these folks are experiencing. Our thoughts are with all who have been impacted by the fires. There are several Gofundme campaigns and other fundraising efforts underway to help those in need. Karen Evasuik (evasuikcd@aol.om) is compiling a list of those in the dog world who have experienced losses and related fundraising efforts. She will relay the information to us as she gets it.

Jason Hoke will be embarking upon a new endeavor in his life in dogs as he has been named President of the Great Dane Club of America. Congratulations Jason. I am sure you will do a terrific job leading the GDCA!

An unprovoked dog attack at the Lawrence, Kansas shows this past weekend should remind us all that asking someone to cover a special-needs dog may not be the best decision. It may be best to decide if the handler of a special-needs dog cannot show it themselves to not have that dog shown at all. It is not fair to that dog, the person being asked to cover the dog, or the other dogs and handlers in the ring to have a dog shown by someone who is not aware of the dog’s triggers, and how the subsequent aggressive behavior should be handled.

I was unable to attend my own national specialty this year in Sacramento, California. I was, however, able to watch my good friend judge sweepstakes via a Facebook Live stream. I was also able to watch the final Best of Breed judging via live streaming. I do not understand why a videographer would disallow spectators to live stream a portion of the judging at a specialty. I believe live streaming is great outreach for our sport, a great educational opportunity, and it enables people not able to attend their National to stay “connected”. In my humble opinion, live streaming and formal video recording are two different things and live streaming would not impact video sales.

I spent last weekend in Henderson, Nevada attending the Black Mountain Kennel Club shows. This year’s venue was lovely. The recreation building gymnasium had four rings including the group ring and there were three rings outside. The grounds were well groomed and the facility was terrific. Once again the club provided an exhibitor lunch on Saturday and cake at group time. Kudos to Keith Pautz and his team for a great show!

Celebrating anniversaries this week are: Tim and Lisa Thomas, Tammy and Greg Bohlke, and Jody and Leonardo Garcini.

Celebrating birthdays are: Connie Gerstner-Miller, Kathy Caton-Musto, Jamie Hubbard, Amy Booth and Kathy Hritzo-Heimann.

Congratulations to all who were awarded at their national specialty! Travel safe my friends, and give those dogs an extra hug! Don’t forget those new exhibitors!

Until next time…
