Table Talk · September 25, 2024

Thank you to one and all for the heathy discussion regarding last week’s column that addressed the video from the Doberman Pinscher ring in Michigan. I was pleased with the discussion proving that fanciers can, in fact, have a positive conversation about issues that arise in our sport. In summary, those who commented condemned the way the handler treated the dog in the ring, calling for accountability and punishment. Many who commented felt owners should also be held responsible if they have knowledge of abuse or allow dogs to be treated in this manner. Many felt it is the owner’s responsibility to be aware of how their dog is being treated and cared for by their dog’s handler.

I hope that when the American Kennel Club reviews the Committee’s recommendation in this case, they overturn it and issue a punishment more appropriate for the offense. I will be keeping my eye on the AKC Gazette Secretary’s page for the result. I will be sure to keep everyone informed.

What happened in Michigan resulted in focus on another issue related to AKC’s policy regarding taking video events inside the rings at a show. It is my understanding that individuals are allowed to video their dog being judged, but only for their personal use. Permission for live-stream video is up to the Show Chairperson AND AKC. (see Commercial Filming at Events Contractual Policy – https://www.akc.org/rules/commercial-filming-events-contractual-policy/).  Please remember this: When showing dogs, we should all be mindful that it is possible that we are “on candid camera” and should act accordingly.

I was encouraged by a social media post on the West Coast Dog Shows Facebook page this past week. Janine Allen called out the perseverance of two amazing dog teams that exhibited in obedience and rally. She called them out because their determination ended in a great outcome. For two days their dogs shut down, but they kept coming back and trying harder. The third day both teams did well, and the support ringside was overwhelming. THIS, my friends, is how we should use social media. Words of encouragement and recognition for a job well done!  Let’s all be like Janine!

I hope you have had the opportunity to watch the Table Talk Live segment with Amy Sorbie, President of the Arapahoe Kennel Club and Kristen Henry, the Chair of the inaugural Regional NOHS event. You can find the segment on the Canine Chronicle Facebook page. The inaugural NOHS event was held this past weekend in conjunction with Arapahoe’s three-day cluster. The club went all out, hiring a separate panel for the event, decorating the rings, and providing amazing ribbons, prizes and hospitality.

Pam Hoerster, a dedicated NOHS exhibitor, summed up her experience:

“I didn’t know what to expect from this inaugural event but let me just say…. It was electric and did not disappoint!! Every attention to detail was noted by the AKC and the wonderful volunteers of the Arapahoe Kennel Club! The AKC sent representatives to support and represent the event. The judging panel was deeply experienced, respected, and genuinely excited to be a part of this historic event! I hope the AKC is able to parlay the huge success and energy of this NOHS Regional event. They can start by supporting the volunteers and the kennel clubs who hold these shows! Huge congrats to all of the winners, and HOORAY for the 600-plus NOHS exhibitors who came to play.”

Congratulations and job well done, Arapahoe Kennel Club, and all of those who participated in this event!

The power of the fancy prevailed once again this past week when Danielle Goodman-Rose was in an automobile accident on her way to the dog show in Wisconsin. When fanciers got wind of the situation, they quickly posted calls for help on social media and kept everyone informed of Danielle and her dogs’ status. Fortunately, all dogs and humans are okay! Danielle will be sore for a bit but considering how the situation could have ended all is good! This is just another indication how important it is to travel with dogs in the appropriate crates!

Some exhibitors from last year’s AKC National Championship show are still trying to get their prize money. If you are one of these exhibitors, you may want to reach out to Glenn Lycan at the American Kennel Club at Glenn.Lycan@akc.org and cc the show chair, Dennis Sprung, at Dennis.Sprung@akc.org.

Happy Anniversary to Paul Clas and Chrystal Murray. May the next year bring you more success and more great adventures.

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include:  Milan Lint, Liz Powell, Vesta Rash, Linda Pitts, Brittany Greendeer, Mandy Clevenger, Anthony Cantor, Kristina Rock, Erika Lanasa, Julie Mueller, Sara Congleton, Andrew Green, Roberta Lombardi, and Tina Turley-Kocab. Cheers to a great year ahead, my friends!!

If your travels bring you to Wine Country in Romulus, NY, next week, please stop by the Purina booth and say hi! Sadly, the Museum of the Dog Wine reception on Saturday evening has been cancelled due to issues with the venue.

Wherever your travels take you, be safe! Give those dogs a big hug and be kind to those around you! I’ll see you soon down the road. Until next time…
