Table Talk

092519

This week the American Kennel Club announced this year’s nominees for their Breeder of the Year award to be presented at the 2019 AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin in Orlando on December 14th. The nominees are as follows:

• Sporting – Lisa Weiss, Lobuff Labrador Retrievers

• Hound – Andy and Jack McIlwaine, Aberdeen Otterhounds

• Working – Renee and Jim Pope, Geistvoll Standard Schnauzers

• Terrier – Aileen and Richard Santo, Paxon Kerry Blue Terriers

• Toy – Jeff Bazell and Jeff Kestner, St. Johns Brussels Griffon

• Non-Sporting – Elizabeth and Daniel Karshner, Little Pond Bulldogs

• Herding – Patricia Princehouse, LaBrise Pyrenean Shepherds

Congratulations to all of the group nominees. If you would like to read the full press release with additional information on the nominees, it is on the Canine Chronicle website. Here is the link: http://caninechronicle.com/breaking-news/the-american-kennel-club-announces-2019-breeder-of-the-year-group-honorees/. What the press release does not cover is the criteria for being nominated for this award, nor do we know who is on the committee responsible for the nominations or granting the award. I am trying to get this information from the AKC as I think this nomination is a huge accomplishment and these hard-working, dedicated breeders deserve to get all the recognition they deserve. Public knowledge of the criteria to be nominated would certainly go a long way toward increasing the prestige of the nomination and ultimately the award, don’t you think? I hope to be able to report back on the nomination criteria soon.

I would like to share with you words from the show chair of the Blue Mountain Cluster, Berks Point:

This is a dog show public service announcement:

If you go to dog shows, show your dogs, show other people’s dogs, are a dog show vendor, or any other person who enjoys or profits from showing, you are specifically younger than 60 and even younger than 40, this message is for you.

If you want to continue doing what you love, you need to join your local all-breed dog club and volunteer your time and efforts! The average age of [members of] many small all-breed clubs is about 60 or older. We are getting tired, sick, aging, having trouble getting around, and working many long days on our feet to provide shows and activities for you in your community! If you don’t step in soon, our clubs, our shows, scholarships, matches, classes, etc. will dry up and disappear forever.

We realize you have kids – so do we. We realize you have grandkids – so do we. We realize you have jobs – so do we. We realize you have multiple dogs to care for – so do we – and any other excuse… we’ve got that too! We still do our part to ensure the continuation of the sport that we all love. Don’t wait until it’s too late then wonder what happened. What happened was that you did not step up to ensure its continuation. Your local kennel club continuation and its events depend on you.

The entry for this year’s Montgomery County Kennel Club has been posted at 1,348. Sunday, October 6, 2019 will be the 85th annual Montgomery County KC show and it is the largest all terrier show in the world. I am very excited to be able to attend this year’s show on behalf of The Canine Chronicle and bring those of you who cannot attend some fun, live coverage! Please join Table Talk Live! either with us at the show, or via our Canine Chronicle Facebook page to stay up to date on what is happening in terrier land!!! For those of you planning to attend, breakfast and lunch will be served in the cafeteria. I would love to get a couple of breed priority segments for our library, so if you are interested in helping with a segment for your breed, please reach out to me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.

Congratulations to Andy Linton’s daughter, Ava, for her great success in 4-H obedience! Ava was named the 4-H Junior Obedience Champion for Washington State with her dog, Bond! Obviously, Ava is following in her father’s paw steps. Congrats also go out to her proud father!

Congratulations to Team McFadden on the recent announcement of an additional team member coming soon. Conor McFadden and Olivia Hodgkinson have announced there is a baby girl on the way! Super congrats to Grandma and Grandpa McFadden, and of course, Conor and Olivia. I know that Taffe and Bill have been stomping their feet waiting for a grandbaby.

Doug Johnson and Jamie Hubbard are off once again on an African Safari. Have a great time, my friends: I can’t wait to see the photos!

We have several friends that are celebrating anniversaries this week. They are: Mary Norton Augustus and Jim Augustus, Mickey Feigelson and Chuck Leachman, and Katie and Adam Bernardin. Katie and Adam took a much-deserved weekend off to celebrate! Happy Anniversary, guys. May you all enjoy many more years of happiness and joy together.

Happy Birthday to Ken McDermott, who is celebrating his 78th birthday soon. Ken, who has attended 33 of the last 40 Montgomery County Kennel Club shows, will not be attending this year but we hope to see him at the show next year.

Also celebrating birthdays this week are: Linda Pitts, Vesta Rash, Mandy Clevenger, Erika Lanasa, Monica Bowers, Julie Mueller, Roberta Lombardi, Tina Turley-Kocab, and Tina Yuhl.

Be safe in your travels to the next show, my friends, and please take to heart the words of the show chair written above. If you are not already a member of your local club, now is the time!!! See you down the road… Until next time…
