The Westminster Kennel Club has announced the rescheduled dates and venue for the 146th Westminster Kennel Club dog show! I am so excited that we are going back to the beautiful Lyndhurst Estate this summer! The new dates for this year’s show are Saturday, June 18th through Wednesday June 22nd. The Masters Agility Championship will be held on Saturday, June 18th, and Obedience, Junior Showmanship and Breed judging will commence on Monday, June 20th. Group judging will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings June 21st and June 22nd. When I left the Lyndhurst Estate last summer, I said I wished we could return. I truly thought the Westminster crew did an absolutely fantastic job with the venue. Congratulations to all involved who worked efficiently to get the show rescheduled. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
At the January AKC Board meeting, the Board reviewed a staff recommendation to provide the opportunity for Championship points to be awarded to a dog that is awarded Winners Dog or Winners Bitch and then wins Best of Breed and goes on to place second, third or fourth in group competition. Currently, only the Winners Dog or Winners Bitch that earns a group one has this opportunity. The board voted unanimously to consider this proposal. What do you think of this proposal? After 24 years of dedicated service, Ann Viklund is retiring from her position as Director, Breeder Enthusiast/Conformation Team with Nestle Purina Pet Care. I have worked with Ann for the last 18 years in my role as a Field Consultant with Purina, and I will miss her. I wish her the best in the next chapter of her life. It seems like it was just yesterday that Ann recruited me to the Breeder Enthusiast Team. Then an Area Manager, Ann was sitting at a card table under the tent at Purina Farms and it was there that our wonderful relationship began. Annie Balotti will be taking over leadership of the Breeder Enthusiast Group. Many of you know Annie from her Area Manager Role at the Purina Event Center. Jessica Flach will be replacing Annie at the Event Center. If you have the opportunity, please wish Ann well, and congratulate Annie and Jessica on their new roles.
We are now one month into the pilot program to allow dogs in the PAL program to participate in Junior Showmanship. Please welcome juniors who are showing their “PAL” dogs in Junior Showmanship, so that they continue to participate.
As a Midwesterner, I am pleased to announce that we are officially half-way through winter!! To all my friends that have braved some pretty sketchy conditions thus far, hang in there! There is light at the end of the winter tunnel!
Some fanciers elected to leave for the Indianapolis shows a bit early in order to miss the weather, and they arrived safe and sound. I hear that finding places to eat was indeed a challenge due to many establishments being closed because of the weather and the lack of cleaning crews on the roads! Apparently, the cleaning crews were on strike and the area was depending on private citizens to help clear the roads. As some said: Denny’s never looked so good!
I am sorry to report that the June Pasadena Kennel Club show will not be happening. Stay tuned for more information about a new date and venue for these shows.
To those planning on attending the Tarheel Circuit in Raleigh in March, hopefully you have your reserved grooming reservations already. I hear the reserved grooming is sold out!

I heard Canadian judge Shawn Nichols is having gall bladder surgery this week. Get well soon my friend. We look forward to having you back soon!
Condolences to Gabriel Rangel on the recent passing of his mother. Our thoughts are with Gabriel, Ivonne, and their family at this very sad time.
Happy Anniversary to Ken and Virginia Murray, Paula and Tom Fultz, and Chris Jones and Tim Plezbert. May you all have many more amazing years ahead.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are: Gina Weiser (a belated happy birthday to you, my friend), Larry Cornelius, Renate Newcomb, Janet Harner, Allan Brown, Erika Busby, Jere Marder, Heidi Hartman, Michelle Michael, Jamie Clute, Beth Blankenship and Jackie Beaudoin.
My thought for this week is this: You have three choices in life, Give up, Give in, or GIVE IT ALL YOU’VE GOT!
Be safe out there, my friends. Don’t forget to lend a hand where you can and thank all of those hard working volunteers that make our shows happen. If you are not already a member of your local all-breed club, look in to becoming involved. Several clubs are currently looking for new, active members!
I will see you soon down the road. Until next time…
