Table Talk · December 2, 2020

It is hard to believe that this is the Monday before I leave for Orlando!  While the show will be different this year–as we all have health and safety as our top priority–this week in Orlando is a clear sign that our sport is alive and well!  I am sure it is going to be a great time for all!

I am sorry to report that, at the worst possible time of the year, the two remaining AKC Executive Field Representatives waiting to be called back to work were notified that their status had been changed from “laid off” to “terminated”.  This status was outlined in a letter placed at the bottom of an empty box sent to each individual to return their AKC property.  The third field rep who had not yet returned to work had already decided to pursue greener pastures and notified AKC of her intentions not to return prior to this latest development.

Many fanciers were very disappointed to hear that the AKC Museum of the Dog had listed both “Doodle” and “Schnoodle” stuffed toys for sale on their website.  The reasons for their disappointment is obvious to most, but apparently not to those who work for the AKC Museum of the Dog.  The good news is when fanciers communicated their concern and disappointment, these mixed-breed items were deleted from their website.

The AKC Executive Field Staff position eliminations mentioned above are apparently not the only ones that have been eliminated.  It seems to me as though there may be staff members whose responsibilities included processing show results that may no longer be employed.  Monthly statistics have customarily been available by the 11th of the month, and usually no later than the 15th.  Currently statistics are only available through September 30th.  Some may have thought that fewer shows would make it easier to process results, but it seems this is not the case.  The Canine Chronicle will continue to have statistics available to the fancy as soon as they are made available to us. We always post them within hours of receiving them from AKC.

Crufts has announced a few changes for the show scheduled for July 15-18, 2021.  They will be capping breed entries, and some competitions that are normally offered will not be held due to the lack of opportunity to qualify.  Entries are slated to open at the end of March via online entry only.

Best wishes to Lisa Croft Elliott who tripped over a cobblestone and had a bad fall in the street.  As a result, she is suffering from a broken kneecap, and a severely injured shoulder.  Heal quickly, Lisa!

Congratulations to Colton and Heather Johnson whose business, Sunrise Dog Training, is featured on the front page of the Colorado Springs Gazette Business Section.  Colton and Heather’s business continues to grow and thrive!

Sincere condolences to Lou Guerrero on the loss of his husband and companion of 52 years, Hank Nave.  Hank passed away from a recently diagnosed cancer.  Our thoughts are with you at this most difficult time.

Briard fancier Cheryl Cannon passed away, suddenly, this past week.  Cheryl is well-known for showing “Odin” the top winning Leonberger of all time.  She will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.  Our sympathies go out to Cheryl’s family and friends.

Those who watched the Kennel Club of Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Day may have noticed a reference to Labradoodles that was made by John O’Hurley.  David Frei did his best to recover this faux paw! (pun intended)

Celebrating birthdays this week are:  Lexie Rogers, Diane Ehricht, Desi Murphy, Scott Yergin, Oscar Quiros, Johnny Shoemaker, Richard Green, Alan Hargrave, Linda Tintle, DVM, Marti Johnson and Clint Livingston.  I hope you all have the best day!

Plans are underway for our Table Talk Live coverage from Orlando!  Please keep an eye on the Canine Chronicle Facebook page and CanineChronicle.TV next week as we keep those of you who cannot be with us up to date on the happenings from the shows there!  If you will be in attendance and are interested in helping out with a breed priority segment, I’d love to hear from you!  Please give me a shout at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.

This week’s thought is:  Somewhere behind the dog handler that you’ve become, the countless hours of practice you’ve put in, the mentors that have pushed you, the money you have spent, the miles you have driven; the blood, the sweat, the tears, the blisters, the ripped clothes, the disappointment, the triumph, the lies and rumors, the crazy dog, the perfect dog that fails health testing, and everything in between…is the person who fell in love with the sport, the dog, the lifestyle, and you NEVER looked back!

I look forward to seeing everyone in Orlando.  Safe travels to all!  Be safe and stay well!  Until next time…
