Table Talk · August 30, 2023

Congratulations to Margery Good and co-owners France Bergeron, Emily Bennett, Lucy Spiegel and Sandra Middlebrooks!  Their Sealyham Terrier, Stache, won the first Chicago Challenge Cup sponsored by The Canine Chronicle in Chicago this past weekend!  Marge was presented with a check for $20,000 and was able to choose from three wonderful charities to donate an additional $5,000.  The charities were the AKC Canine Health Foundation, Take the Lead, or the American Heart Association.  Team Stache chose the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

I truly enjoyed looking at all the wonderful photographs of fanciers who enjoyed sight-seeing as they made their way to the World Dog Show in Switzerland.  Thanks to social media, many of us who were not able to make the trek had the joy of watching some of the breed and group competition courtesy of our friends who were fortunate enough to attend.  I have heard wonderful things about the city, the countryside, and the show.  Congratulations to all our US fanciers who were able to compete, and kudos to everyone who had a part in making the show a great success!  Attending the World Dog Show is on my bucket list!

It was great to see Jackie Stacey out and about and judging this past weekend.  Jackie is the picture of courage and determination. She will not allow cancer to stop her from doing what she loves.  I was pleased to see fanciers affording Jackie patience and support, and that was part of the equation that led to her successful judging assignment her first week out after her brain surgery.  We are glad to have you back, Jackie!  Keep up the great work!

There are several breeds that have ‘spanning’ in their breed standard. For those who don’t know, ’spanning’ is a hands-on procedure done to assess the shape, size, and elasticity of the ribcage. Recently there have been several occurrences where the judge did not span dogs during their assignment. Exhibitors were not sure of what to do if the judge fails to span their breed during inspection.  If something is in the breed standard, it is a required part of the examination.  If the judge does not span the dog, however, it does not disqualify the win.  There are a couple different ways to handle this situation.  First, it is not inappropriate to diplomatically remind the judge on your individual exam that it is part of your breed standard.  If you are not comfortable with this approach, you should report the situation to the AKC Representative after judging. Remember, the key is to be kind and respectful.

There continues to be confusion about NOHS eligibility requirements.  Here are the basics:

  1. Your dog must be entered in NOHS by checking the box on the entry form.
  2. Your dog must be eligible to compete in the Best of Breed class (either as a champion, Winners Dog, or Winners Bitch) and remain eligible until defeated by another Owner-Handled entry.
  3. Once your dog has been defeated by another Owner-Handled entry, your dog is no longer eligible to be judged for NOHS Best Of Breed.

Remember This:

BOW defeats the other class winner

Select dog defeats the males

Select bitch defeats the females

BOS defeats all dogs of the same sex

BOB defeats all dogs in the BOB competition so if eligible, that dog is automatically awarded BOBOH.

I hope this information is helpful not only to exhibitors, but to judges and stewards as well.

It is with great sadness to report that Kathy Toomey passed away.  Kathy was very loved and deeply respected by all who had the pleasure of calling her a friend.  She was well-known for her involvement in Great Danes, and she also bred Miniature Bull Terriers.  Kathy will be sorely missed by the many in our sport.  My sincere condolences to Doug and the rest of Kathy’s family and friends.

The sport is also mourning the loss of AKC Judge and Weimaraner fancier, Gale Young.  Gale was involved in the sport of purebred dogs for over 50 years.  She successfully competed in the conformation ring, in the field and in the obedience ring.  Gale was a lovely lady who was always pleasant and generous with her time as a mentor. Our sympathies to Gale’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Happy Anniversary to Doug and Kay Belter!  I am so glad you were able to get out to Santa Barbara and celebrate your anniversary in southern California style!  Also celebrating an anniversary this week are Kim and Tony Calvacca.  I wish you lovebirds many more wonderful years.

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include: Adam Bernardin, Chuck Suda, Jenny Lee Roller, Tim Terella, Lanie Zgrabik, Luke Seidlitz, , Peggy Beisel-McIlwaine, Tanner Congleton, Beep Lee and Eddie Dziuk.  May you all have many more happy, healthy years ahead!

Wherever your travels take you, please be kind and supportive to your fellow exhibitors and volunteers.  If you have not had a chance to view the Table Talk Live segments from this past weekend, please be sure to check the Canine Chronicle website or Facebook page!  I look forward to seeing everyone soon!
