Table Talk · August 25, 2021

It is hard to believe that Summer 2021 is coming to an end! While I enjoy the fall, it means that winter weather challenges are right around the corner for this Midwesterner! There are weather issue of one type or another for any location. No place is perfect. Friends on the West Coast continue to be challenged by summer fires, while our friends on the East Coast continue to batten down the hatches to protect themselves from tropical storms and possible hurricanes. As fanciers, we can always count on our friends for help when it is needed, and I remain thankful for that each and every day.

Regrettably, the American Boxer Club has been forced to cancel their 2021 National Specialty.  It was rescheduled from May to September due to venue challenges. ABC had no choice but to cancel this year’s show as a result of the hotel not being able to fulfill their contract. The volunteers of ABC work tirelessly to hold a premier national specialty and this comes as a huge disappointment to all involved. 2022 is right around the corner my friends, and I am sure that it will be a fantastic National Specialty.

A popular venue for dog shows in Southern California–the Industry Hills Expo Center–has been experiencing ownership challenges which have also caused them to cancel all held there. Sadly, the Santa Ana Valley Kennel Club has had to cancel their shows scheduled for October 1-3, 2021. Clubs who were planning a show at this venue should begin seeking alternative venues sooner rather than later as there has been no word from the Expo Center regarding a resolution to their problem.

Many fanciers were concerned when the judging program for the Reno Kennel Club shows was published as groups were scheduled after breed judging rather than at a certain time. This is similar to how shows are scheduled in Canada. The Kennel Club responded to the exhibitor’s apprehension and revised the judging schedule. Kudos to the club for being responsive to the fancier concerns.

Brian Still continues to recover from his massive stroke a few weeks back. Part of his recovery includes memory triggers. Hearing from his friends in the fancy can aid in his recovery. Those who would like to send a card to Brian can use the following address:

                                                New Britain Central Hospital

                                                100 Grand Street

                                                #N5 15

                                                New Britain CT  06052

If you are in the area and would like to visit Brian, visiting hours are from 10 AM-12 PM and 4-8 PM. Keep up the good work, Brian. We look forward to having you back at the shows!

I hope everyone had a chance to catch the Table Talk Live! segment with Liz Muthard and Charlie Olvis regarding the Penn Ridge Charitable Organization and the recent ‘Racing Back to the Future’ fundraising event held in Doswell, Virginia. If not, jump on Canine Chronicle TV or our Facebook page and learn more about their incredible efforts on behalf of the fancy. This year’s event raised well over $20,000 and will be donated to Take The Lead, the George Ward Scholarship Fund, the AKC Canine Health Foundation, and the Harrisburg Kennel Club K9 Foundation. To quote Liz, “Big thanks to the generous sponsors who support this event. They are the heroes who enable us to plan these fundraising events. Everyone who attends or buys raffle tickets along with the sponsors have contributed to the success of the evening. We are indebted to each and every one of them! We are so proud of the people in the sport…Together we all made this happen!” Huge congratulations to Liz and Charlie for all your continued hard work!

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of fancier Dana Pearl. Dana has been the Show Chair of the Malibu Kennel Club for many years. She got her first show dog, an English Cocker Spaniel, from Debbie Campbell Freeman 25 years ago. That began a longtime friendship. Dana was a successful financial advisor and investor and had just returned to work after an electrical house fire caused a total loss of her home and belongings several weeks back. Dana suffered a massive heart attack last week and passed away. Our thoughts are with Debbie and Ron, and Dana’s friends and family members following her loss. Donations in Dana’s memory can be made to Take The Lead.

Heartfelt sympathy goes out to Glenn and Rebecca Lycan on the loss of Glenn’s mother, Audrey.  Audrey was a great friend and mentor to many in the fancy and will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. To quote Glenn, “My mother lived a full life. She never let go of the things she loved. Good friends and all dogs. I miss you. A life well-lived deserves a peaceful rest. Rest in Peace. I know there is a dog by your side at this moment.”

Several fanciers are celebrating wedding anniversaries this week. A very happy anniversary to Kelly and Edwin Shupp, Michael Capton and Michelle Montes-Capton, Anita and Eric O’Berg, and Jane and Greg Myers. Enjoy your special day and be sure to spend some quality time together!

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Danielle Frykman, Patty Keenan, Bobby Fisher, Faith Ott, Christian Rangel, Tim Terella, Jenny Lee Roller, Luke Seidlitz, Lanie Zgrabik, and David Fitzpatrick. Enjoy your special day, one and all!

I leave you this week with a quote from Nigel Aubrey-Jones, “When judging dogs, some things are a matter of opinion; others are a matter of fact!”

I hope to see many of you in Santa Barbara this week! Please stop by the Purina Booth and say Hi! Be safe, wherever your travels take you. Don’t forget to enjoy the moment and hold those you love close to your heart! Until next time…
