I’ve often mentioned how lucky we are to have such a close-knit community in the sport of purebred dogs. Despite occasional disagreements, we always support each other—whether it’s rescuing friends with broken-down rigs or caring for pets in emergencies. Last week, that support and those relationships reached a whole new level.
Our friend Alan Hargrave has been fighting kidney disease for some time. He has shown perseverance and kept a positive attitude throughout his fight. He has been going for kidney dialysis while buying time until he could receive a new kidney. Here’s the good news. Alan received his new kidney, donated by long-time Keeshond fancier Jeri Kissling last week– and they are both back home and doing incredibly well. This, my friends, is bringing kindness and consideration for others to a whole new level! THANK YOU, Jeri for your gift of life and for making our community aware of organ donation. To those who have not indicated they are an organ donor on your driver’s license, I urge you to do so! Best wishes to you, Alan, for a full recovery. We can’t wait to see you at the shows again!
The largest specialty in the world kicked off this week in Maryland. The Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac attracts the best examples of the breed from all over the world. The volunteers of “the Potomac” are committed to educating judges about the breed, and they invite aspiring judges from all over the country to participate in a comprehensive judge’s education program. Any clubs that are contemplating overhauling their judge’s education program should check out the judge’s ed at the Potomac! A note to any judges interested in stepping up your knowledge on Labrador Retrievers: This is the place to go!
A couple of weeks ago, a large rescue of Dachshunds took place in Ohio after a breeder became ill and couldn’t care for them. Thankfully, some breeders prioritized the dogs’ well-being and stepped in to help, despite the difficult situation. While there’s no excuse for allowing things to get out of control, the priority was getting the dogs to safety. This should serve as a reminder to all breeders and fanciers to watch out for each other and offer help before situations escalate.
From Washington to Florida! It looks like our friend Patty Keenan will be relocating back to Florida. Best wishes to you, my friend, as you enter the next chapter of your life. Good luck with the new job!
I heard Debbie Davenport took a fall at home and banged her head pretty good! She had a ride to the hospital via ambulance, and she is doing well now! In true Debbie fashion, she did not let that fall stop her from traveling to Dallas, Texas to enjoy her niece’s wedding. That’s the way to keep on keeping on, girl!
Congratulations to Erin Pearcy-Foreman, who is celebrating 9 years sober! Your commitment to staying sober is an inspiration to many!
Happy 44th wedding anniversary to Wayne and Cheryl Cavanaugh! Best wishes for many more years of happiness together.
We have a lot of fanciers celebrating birthdays this week. They are Beth Sweigart, Ken Murray, Pat Luce, Susie Olivera, Jen Milani, Carla Sanchez, Will Alexander, BJ Whitlow, Kathy Guerra, Roxanne Chumbley, Lynn Comstock, Johann Emedi, Robin Stansell, Melinda Lyon, Ken Wall, Pam Peat, Aaron Wilkerson, Howie Huber III, Pat Evetts, and Lynda Beam. May this be the best year yet for every one of you!!
Please let these words of wisdom be your guiding principle while showing dogs: Keep your mouth closed, your heart open, and may the chips fall where they may.
Stay safe out there, and don’t forget that act of kindness! May each one of you bring home beautiful ribbons and whelp beautiful puppies! Until next time…
