Need a Hotel for Westminster? Here’s Your Guide!

By Amy Fernandez

It’s that time of year! The time to make your Westminster hotel reservations.

Like last year, Westminster 2014 will be split between two Midtown venues. All benching and breed judging takes place at Piers 92/94 between West 55th- 57th Streets on Twelfth Avenue between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding breeds will be judged Monday.

Sporting, Working and Terrier breeds will be judged Tuesday.

The show moves back to the Garden for the Junior Showmanship Finals, Groups, and Best In Show, starting at 8:00 p.m. Monday and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

February 10-11, 2014 seems like the distant future, but it’s recommended you make your hotel reservations soon. The traditional favorites, The New Yorker, the Penn, and the Affinia are within a block of the Garden on West 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue. Westminster’s much longer list of Midtown hotels accepting dogs, with contact information, discount codes, cut-off dates, and rates is online at www.Westminterkennelclub.org

The Canine Chronicle Picks:

New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania  | 401 Seventh Ave., New York, NY 10001 |212-736-5000  |

Affinia Manhattan | 371 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10001 · 31st and 7th  | Tel: 212.563.1800  |

Hotels downtown from the Garden include:

The Radisson MARTINIQUE at 49 West 32nd Street is a little farther east between Fifth Ave. and Broadway

THE HAMPTON INN at 116 West 31st Street is one block farther south, but closer to Sixth Avenue

The EVENTI HOTEL at 851 Sixth Ave. is another block down at the corner of Sixth Avenue and  30th Street.

THE DOUBLETREE at 128 West 29th Street is two blocks farther downtown.

The HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS at 232 West 29th Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, is farther west, making it closer to the Garden.

The HOTEL INDIGO at 127 West 28th Street, is farther downtown and east between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.

The HILTON GARDEN INN at 121 West 28th Street is almost next door to the Indigo.

THE HAMPTON INN – Chelsea at 108 W. 24th Street is ten blocks south of the Garden.

Hotels north of MSG offering Westminster discounted rates include:

The PARKER MERIDIEN at 119 West 56th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues about midway between the Garden and the Piers.

The MARRIOTT COURTYARD at 114 West 40th Street between Sixth Avenue and Broadway. It is near the New York Public Library.  Bryant Park behind the library hosts much of Fashion Week, which usually coincides with Westminster week.

The CANDLEWOOD SUITES – TIMES SQUARE at 339 West 39th Street is almost ten blocks uptown,  about midway between Seventh and Eight Avenues.

THE HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS – HERALD SQUARE is located at 60 West 36th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, and is three blocks from AKC headquarters.

The RESIDENCE INN – TIMES SQUARE is at 1033 Sixth Avenue between 38th and 39th Streets. It is two blocks north of AKC headquarters.

Approximately 2/3 of the show will be at the Piers. The closest hotel in that area accepting dogs and offering Westminster special rates is the SKYLINE located at 725 Tenth Avenue at 49th Street.

Other option include:

THE HELMSLEY PARK LANE at 36 Central Park South. It is at 59th Street off of Fifth Avenue

There is a HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS at 15 West 45th Street off of Fifth Avenue.

The MUSE NEW YORK at 130 West 46th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues next to Rockefeller Center is a lovely hotel.

The DOUBLETREE GUEST SUITES is located at 1568 Broadway and 47th Street.

Needless to say, New York hotel rates are painful. However, competition is fierce and February isn’t prime tourist season. It pays to shop around travel sites. If you find a great deal at another hotel don’t hesitate to grab it.  Manhattan’s grid layout makes navigation simple.

FYI: Streets run north and south, numbered in ascending order. The avenues run east and west, 1-12. Fifth Avenue, down the center, divides Manhattan’s East and West sides. Addresses east or west of Fifth are designated as such.  North/south street blocks are fairly short, averaging about 20 per mile. Avenues vary in length but they are typically much longer, about seven per mile.

See you in February!  Happy Hotel Hunting!
