Multi-Purpose Canines Take To The Skies
The Multi-Purpose Canine Program has proved to be a crucially important part of the United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC). A Multi-Purpose Canine is explicitly trained for specific missions of the Marines with the MARSOC, which is far beyond the training of an average military working dog. Multi-Purpose Canines have the skill sets of many military working dogs combined.
Training for Multi-Purpose Canines is rigorous and extensive. Training includes tracking, explosive detection, protection and a myriad of other skills. Also with training, the dogs learn to swim long distances in open water, clear beaches of explosives, assist during close quarter battles and to deploy in combat. Multi-Purpose Canines also develop strong bonds with their handlers during the training process. Many times, this handler will be the dog’s sole handler for his entire career.
Interestingly, Multi-Purpose Canines even assist their handlers in operations in flight and in the skies – they are trained and able to parachute. In the photos below, a Marine Raider with the United States Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations command parachutes with a Multi-Purpose Canine over the Marine Corps Base in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. MARSOC continues to demonstrate their versatile capabilities and Multi-Purpose Canine handlers are preparing their canines to maneuver in new areas of operation. The photos were taken on September 10, 2015 with credit to Sgt. Scott Achtemeier, MARSOC.
