Milan: World Capital Of Dog Lovers

Note: The 2015 World Dog Show closing date for entries has been extended to today, Thursday, May 14, 2015.

Milan, May 2015 – Milan, Lombardy and Italy will be under the world spotlight when over 23,000 dogs, consisting of 300 different breeds from 40 countries from across all continents will gather to be judged by 200 international experts during the World Dog Show from 11th to June 14th, 2015 to award the title of World Champion. From 10th to June 13th there will take place, in the same location, the Club Show for the title of Italian Champion (CAC). The Italian Kennel Club (ENCI) was awarded the largest global canine event on earth by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the organization of the World Dog Show 2015 (WDS 2015). The show will occupy 103,000 square meters in 6 dedicated pavilions at ‘Fiera Milano’ (Rho). Over 150 thousand visitors, fans and lovers of four- legged friends are estimated to attend the show.

These are the statistics, presented by ENCI leaders to the press at the seat of the Regional Government of Lombardy.

“It’s a pleasure for us to be here today to present the 2015 Edition of the World Dog Show, entrusted to us by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) – says Dino Muto, President of Italian Kennel Club (ENCI) – we finally succeded in bringing the show back to Italy after 15 years. A responsibility that confirms the respect and confidence of all dog lovers in the world and that we welcome with enthusiasm; confident of being able to honor them. For four days the most beautiful dogs in the world will be the focus of attention and will involve more than 150,000 expected international visitors as well as the Italian public, families and children, in the very year in which Milan hosts the Universal Exposition. It will be a great opportunity to get in touch with breeders and enthusiasts from all over the world as well as to learn about the city that represents for the North of Italy the main pulsating engine in terms of industry, trends, projects, fashion, sport and solidarity”.

The President of the Lombardy Region, Roberto Maroni, through a note expressed appreciation to ENCI for the organization of Canine world exhibition in June and for choosing to bring it to Milan, in Lombardy, the region which has always been close to pets, especially dogs, as evidenced by a Bill presented in the Regional Council to better protect the rights and health of our animals. “With this initiative – writes the Governor – we want to remove prohibitions that make it hard to live with our animals, broadening access to dogs in public places, and also increasing controls to defeat the phenomenon of abandonment of stray dogs and mistreatment”.

ENCI organizes and recognizes about 2,000 events a year throughout the country and registers an increasing number of purebred dogs in the Italian Stud Book, which in 2014 has reached 150,000 studs, with 26,000 of those registered within the Region of Lombardy.

“The World Dog Show – explains Dino Muto – is the exhibit through which will be chosen at the end of five days of important trait checks, the most beautiful dog in the world. But to get this long-awaited moment, subjects enrolled, belonging to different breeds and at first divided by gender and class, will be the focus of attention of a judge who will evaluate the morphological characteristics, qualities and small defects, in relation to the international standard. The assessment will be carried out with dogs both dogs both in motion and while stationary, so that the judge can appreciate the quality. The judge will then choose the best subject for each breed who will then be compared in a parade, with dogs that belong to different races but all of superb beauty, to find the best examples from each group”.

The breeds are, in fact, grouped into ten groups according to a subdivision, internationally recognized, based on similar characteristics. For example, group 3 includes the different terrier breeds while group 10 is the greyhounds breeds. The competition continues until the moment of confrontation of the best 10 dogs representing each group. On Sunday June 14th the Best in Show will take place and it will be proclaimed the winner of the World Dog Show 2015.

Numerous prestigious titles are to be won, such as the title of Italian Champion (through the Club Show scheduled from 10th to 13th June) and the World Champion (WDS2015 from 11th to 14th June), male and female of each breed, as crowning moment of the selection of the best breeders.

During the event there will be performances of dog dance, flyball and disc dog to offer to the audience an unforgettable show. Among the initiatives not to be missed there are the agility competitions that are always inspiring to visitors and players. The Show will offer educational and cultural moments, initiatives for junior handlers, where the boys engage in the best performance with dogs of different breeds and sizes, and different occasions to discover the abilities of the best rescue and guide dogs and those of social utility (wds2015.com).

With the mission to promote and preserve the biodiversity of Italian dog breeds ENCI works to create all the conditions for better coexistence between the dog and the family who welcomes him, aware of its features and ready to respect their attitudes to a mutual enrichment.
The different characteristics of the breeds allow Man to choose his life partner that best suits his needs respecting those of the dog, giving rise to a deep and rewarding relationship, which may become a source of balance and help for children and adults.

During the year, ENCI promotes awareness programs in schools aimed at boys. The goal is to get them involved and to help them to understand the value of a satisfying relationship between man and his best friend. Actually this makes young people more conscious and reduces the risk of future abandonment and mistreatment of the animal.
