Help Send The US Junior Representative to Crufts!!

Former Junior Handler and second generation breeder, Maggie Peat set about sending 3 juniors to Crufts in 2010 by spear-heading fundraising efforts. In less than a month, Maggie oversaw donations of $5,000. The funds have since been depleted after helping several juniors and Peat is looking to help continue to raise funds for the future of our sport.

The winner of the AKC Invitational Junior Competition is the designated U.S. representative for Crufts. While the winner receives some material awards and a $2,000 scholarship, the junior receives no financial assistance to go to Crufts. The American Kennel Club is generously covering the hotel costs, but that still leaves air travel for the junior and a chaperone to Birmingham and the exorbitant cost of food in the U.K. Peat believes $3,000 per trip is a realistic expense for the yearly winning representative and chaperone, so she has committed to maintaining this fund on an ongoing basis for future juniors.

The email address for contributions at PayPal is USJUNIOR.CRUFTS@GMAIL.COM and Peat, a Vice President at Wells Fargo, is the administrator of the PayPal account.

About 2013 U.S. Crufts Junior Representative Katelyn Edgecombe:

Katelynn Edgecombe, a sophomore won Best Junior Handler at the 2013 American Kennel Club’s Eukanuba National Championship Dog Show held December 14-15 in Orlando, Florida. Katelynn defeated 148 other handlers this past month. It was Katelynn’s first time competing at the prestigious event.

Katelynn got involved in dog showmanship when she was encouraged to join a 4-H club in Snohomish County about seven years ago even though she didn’t own a show dog. She used her 4-H leader’s bullmastiff to learn how to handle a dog in the showmanship ring, and she quickly started winning first place in junior novice competitions. She eventually transitioned to a show quality Australian shepherd in order to become more competitive in open class competitions. Then three years ago a short, stout pug full of personality named Lara entered her life. Lara, whose full name is CH Luna’s Timeliss Lara Croft Of Cantu, and Katelynn became a team. Katelynn wrote in an online interview about Lara, “Our first time out we got best junior, and I knew it was a match made in heaven. She loves to show and we have fun together.”
